You cannot use your husbands GI Bill for your education.

A couple of years ago, the Army did a test program, where they allowed spouses to use the GI Bill of their military spouse.

But the Army discontinued that program after 6 months.

No he cannot. And when the new GI Bill takes effect in Aug 1st 2009, He still will not, You have to serve at least 4 years on active duty, after Aug 1st 2009, To be able to transfer your GI Bill to your spouse. There are other qualifications also.

My husband has been in the army for 18 years, so my answer is coming from years of being around the military. Currently the only way a spouse can us the soldiers G.I. Bill is if it was included as an incentive on his contract when the soldier first enlisted. They are currently trying to also add it as an incentive for first time re-enlistees. Unfortunately that does not help out alot of people that could be using it while their soldier is busy training or deployed. Alot of soldiers are not using their G.I. Bill while in the military and alot of them also have no plans to use it once they separate from service. Alot of families could really benefit and improve their financial situation if they would open it up to all spouses upon approval from their sponsor and their chain of command

My husband is deployed, and wants me to use his GI Bill while he is gone. Contact the education center on post. They will have to contact his unit, and as everything else in the Army, be prepared for a long drawn out process. They will want you to make an appointment with a counselor. That should get you started. Good luck!!!

I am not sure they have made it available to family members yet, I do know they are leaning that direction. The best place to start is with the Veterans Administration since they actually run the program. Most big schools have a VA rep in the admin bldg but you may need to go to your main VA.

I went to the VA's website and did a quick search. I have heard of others transfering their benifits to their dependents. The below link may help you out. It is to the VA's website question and answer page. Get it straight from the horses mouth. There are even phone numbers there. Hope this helps.

I'm not sure of the exact process of doing this, but your local VA (Veteran's Affairs) or VA Office on the nearest post can point you in the right direction.
