That verse helps with a proper understanding of the concept of grace.

Christ's Atonement accomplished a number of blessings for us. Some of them are unconditional such as being resurrected. Some are conditional of our faith in Christ, evident by our thoughts and actions.

So you can correctly say that by grace we are saved, but to gain everything our Heavenly Father would like, requires us to change our lives in accordance with His teachings.

Just believing that the Lord is Lord and saying that he is will not get you to Heaven. Only if you obey God can you enter into Heaven.

And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day. (John 6:40)

In this passage Jesus Himself has the answer to what the will of His Father is. We can say Lord Lord to Jesus while scorning his commandments. If you believe in Him you will obey Him. To call Him 'Lord, Lord,' and not obey Him is hypocrisy. One kind of person the Lord roundly denounced was the hypocrite.

You can talk the talk, but can you walk the walk? Jesus is talking about phony Christians who, on the outside appearance, look like pious workers for God and claim to do all these wonderful works in the name of Jesus, but their hearts are not in the right place. You must accept Jesus as your Savior to get to heaven. Works alone will not get you there. The people Jesus is talking about may claim to be Christians, but they have not surrendered their lives and hearts to Jesus, and there is evil and sin in their hearts. This is a solemn warning for those who claim to be Christians but really are not because they haven't made that full surrender or commitment to Christ. God knows each person's heart, and He knows the innermost thoughts even in the darkest crevices of one's mind. He can tell a phony from the real McCoy. If you are not walking the walk, then you won't go to heaven. A very solemn warning indeed. Is your heart right with God?

It is a warning for those who pay lip service and do not "Know" Jesus or follow his word....

"Many will say to Me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in Your name, and in Your name cast out demons, and in Your name perform many miracles?.....The rest of this text is not good.... I consider it quite often,in my own personal walk.

Many people may call Jesus Lord, but don't obey God's will. In other words, they say Jesus is Lord, but they allow other things to "rule" their lives. It's impossible to say "No, Lord," becuase if you say no, He isn't Lord of your life....

Live righteously according the commandments of God.
Knowing the Lord and calling His name is not enough to warrant your assurance of heaven. Prove that you believe and that you are to live accordingly.

If it is true, I am not doomed to Hell, because even though I am an atheist, I still try to behave in a manner that would make God proud. I don't believe in him, but I try to be good for the sake of myself and for the sake of those I interact with.
