I don't know why but I'm just getting this feeling tonight like a lot of Atheists here think all religious people, no matter what the religion, and no matter who they are, are stupid, or at least not as smart as non-religious people.

I am not a Muslim, but I don't think Muslims are stupid. I don't think Atheists are stupid, nor Christians, nor any group of people like that.

No I don't think religious people are stupid. I think people are entitled to their beliefs. The only thing I don't like about SOME religious people is that they try to push their beliefs on other people, no one should that, including atheist. I do however find some things in religion to be urrr...not logical...but if people wanna follow them that that's their business. We wouldn't have a lot of the problems that we do if more people were tolerate.

Heron - You bring up a very interesting question. I wouldn't call myself an atheist but I am definitely non-religious and if you read many of my other posts you will see that I have been guilty of stating, implying or inferring the stupidity of other people in this forum. As a result I think I am able to give you some insight on this issue.

I spend a lot of time working with people for my job and in other areas of my life and the simple truth that I have come to accept is that most people, regardless of religion, are stupid. The biggest problem that I see in the professional world stems from a lack of two critical skills that people need to be successful. The first skill is the ability to write and the second skill is the ability to think. The art of critical thinking is lost on the vast majority of the population at large. Most people just want wrote instructions that they can follow to the letter. Being able to look at the big picture and ask "why?" allows a person to improve their performance in most areas of life.

Most religious people have been taught to avoid asking why. Religious teachers tend to believe that the rational mind is the enemy of religion and as a result children grow into adults without being taught to rely on their own observation and judgment when making decisions. This is not true of all religious people but the vast majority have never questioned their path or looked beyond what they have been given as truth. I have no respect for people like that. I have a number of religious friends who are very intelligent but the unfortunate truth is that extreme religion tends to breed stupidity in most of its members. Objectivity is lost and the rational mind becomes a burden.

I'm an atheist, and I don't think that being religious makes someone stupid. Ignorant, yes. Stupid, no. I've met some very intelligent Christians and some very stupid atheists.

The point of that argument sailed right over your head...the point of that argument was that Christianity was no more real to that particular atheist than Zeus. It wasn't that there are choices, it was that the person found them all to be equally pointless. One of the worst arguments I've heard is that "My religion is a loving one, stupid, yes, you don't feel the love, so you are stupid" I'm paraphrasing, but I hope you get the point.

No I don't think religious people are stupid.

But to be honest, I have a conflict: how can intelligent people believe in a god? I know they do.. but it confuses me to my core. And more than that, how can intelligent people say things like (and I quote various users here on Y!A)

"If you are not God's child you are not covered with the blood of Jesus." and "The gift of tongues, and the baptism of the Holy Spirit is like turning up the gas on a pilot light. " or "God 'talks' to me by ..... a certain idea just popping into my head for no reason" or "Seeing isn't believing, Believing is seeing."

No I do not think ALL religious people are stupid...but you have to admit...there are some spud brains on here. I love smart people. I love intelligent discussions. I love finding things in common with people. But I do become impatient with stupidity.

No, there are plenty of intelligent people who believe in religion and god.

I believe that religion tends to be misguiding. It causes people to cease finding the truth. It leads them blindly.

I'll say this though - there are more stupid religious people than stupid atheists.

No. Not all. Most believers I know personally are very smart people.
It just seems that way when you read posts on here, because there are some believers who post very dumb questions directed at atheists, and atheists start to lose patience with it.
