The atheist say " what so much say so in politics do we have " ? How about ... No Prayer in school , No Christmas displays , No Easter Resurrection displays , No Bibles can be taken to school , God`s Holy name cannot be mentioned in Graduation speeches , ball games or social events in public !! Christians didn`t pass these so called laws , unbelieving politicians and hypocritical Christian politicians did..

It's obvious you have NO idea what you're talking about.
The religious right have SUCH a presence in government (our "wonderful" president being one of them) that it's almost a miracle that this country remains secular.
I'm sure you knew it's illegal for atheists to hold government positions in many states.
I'm sure you know that Bush uses tax dollars to fund religious-backed family organizations.
I'm sure you know that this country is one of the most religious nations on the planet (and a Superpower at that! Almost an oxymoron!).
Do some research before you spring a question like this.

I think it's about 4%, but either way atheists are a very small percentage of the population. They do not have very much power at all.
However, our founding fathers were correct in their foresight, to separate Church and State, and many believers defend those policies. So what you are perceiving may be that.
Believe me the Christian Right is way more powerful than the atheists could ever hope to be...

It is close to 10% in reality. It is hard to get good numbers but I have never seen a survey lower than about 3% so I have no idea where they even thought that 1% number comes from. I have seen 3% up to almost 17% depending on how you ask the question.
And the big thing is the founders were deists and wrote the Constitution to prevent a majority from forcing their religion on a minority. So we tend to win in court when Christians try.

I really don't know. In Springfield IL. they passed a moment of silence in Public Schools to start off the day. No Prayer just one minute of Silence. Atheists jumped on that and said it sounded to much like prayer. And they are taking the Public Schools to court over t! There was no mention of praying at all. Just asking the students to keep silent for one minute at the start of the day! What is the big deal?

I don't really think that they do have that much say in politics. I've never heard of a politician getting into office because of his wholesome atheist values.
It's all of the "other" religions that are making it so hard for the Christian majority to ban homosexuality, force children to pray in schools, prohibit abortion, and tell us which God to worship. There are many types of religion in this country and they should all have a say in how it is run. And they should have the freedom to support what their (G)god(s) tell them is right.

I think most people are not religious and prefer a scientific method of thinking so they sympathize more with atheists than the religious right. Also, so much of the American religious / political organization is centered around a cult of personality, it turns me off no matter how benign the message may be.

According to the CIA world factbook it's about 10% - whoever said 1% was lying or mistaken.
And we are underrepresented, if anything, because of the nature of the political system.
Besides, it doesn't matter. What percentage of african americans is enough for slavery to be wrong?

I think the reason is that Christians tend to thumb down each other a lot. "Christian" is such a broad term it's like "mammal". So there is quite a lot of disagreement between Christians themselves because the others are just never "Christian" enough.

Since there's such a small number of them, more of them feel the need to defend their own ideas. Just like other minorities do.
