Not a big fan of tattoos. But I want to cover up a large scar. The scar now looks more like a burn, and covers my entire left shoulder then comes off in a strip towards the middle of my chest. So I was thinking a snake would be good. Since the shoulder is basically a huge circle, I would have the snake coiled there and then the snake's head could come off the strip towards the middle of my chest. I live in California. And I would like this to look nice and probably colored in etc. I figure this will run a ton. I know nobody can price it without me being there etc. But if you were to guess an estimate? What would you say? Just looking for a rough idea. Thanks :).

if you're not really a fan of tattoos it seems silly to get one. firstly tattooing scarred skin tissue is a very different thing and very few artists are talented enough to do it, especially to tattoo such a large area of scarred skin. don't just go to some shop, do research. having said that, whomever is talented enough to do the tattoo is going to be more expensive because of their talent. i'm not sure exactly how large your shoulder is but i would say something like that would cost upwards of $1000-$2000.

If the burn scar is recent or large you might want to go into the shop and see if they can properly tattoo it because sometimes placing a tattoo over a scar causes the ink to run and makes it look messy. Two factors determine the pricing, size and quality. A snake will probably be long but not that wide, so I guess something like 6"x0.75" and the quality will not need to be that high since a snake is relatively easy to draw and reproduce. I would expect you to pay anywhere from $150-350. I got a tattoo of the grim reaper 3"x3" is awesome color and quality for only $200 to cover a small scar as well. I think you should pay what they ask for and go to a professional(avoid the new tattooers) because a tattoo will last a lifetime ;)

It'll run at least a couple hundred, but you need to consult an artist before running from sticker shock. Some scars cannot be tattooed over, because the damaged skin will not hold ink.

And if you're not a fan of tattoo's, I don't think you'd be happy in the long run with having all that ink coming across your chest. Like the other poster said, try some scar removal creams, or see a dermatologist about some possible laser treatments. Who knows, having the scar laser-lightened may run close to the same as the cover-up tattoo, and I think it would be something you'd be more happy with.

Some scar's cannot be tattooed over. You will need to find a tattoo artist experienced in scar tattooing to know which colors can cover effectively. If the scar is raised, then it probably can't be tattooed at all.

Personally, I'm not a big fan of tattoos myself, however, i had a huge mark on my neck from an operation, I purchased maderma, a scar remover and it works great, maybe you should try to invest in that first and also to see if you could have the scar laser removed. you know for a long time i wore the scar on my neck proudly and did not care who did not like it. I accepted it.
