I am not asking this to be sarcastic. I'm really wondering. Tom Cruise gave Brooke Shields grief for taking medicine for post-partum depression. He stated his beliefs regarding medicine as a scientologist. I was just wondering, how is it that they had a test tube baby? Wouldn't that require doctors and medical treatments? Isn't that something that isn't considered natural? I'm just curious how that fits in the guidelines and it is okay for him. Does anyone know?

So it is only mental health medication he doesn't like? I appreciate that response. Thank you. But why does he get to decide what medicine is okay and what is not?

I think it wasn't medicine but psychiatry that he (and Scientology) had a problem with.

The practice of psychiatry interferes with the testing/cleaning/whatever process that Scientology makes its money off of.

Tom Cruise has thunder thighs and a classic profile. Other than that, I find him ugly. I know nothing of this test tube of which you speak. As for being out-spoken, I also do not believe that women should have drugs foisted upon them at every little complaint. Doctors are under pressure from the drug companies to promote their drugs, since their research takes 10 years (in which they cannot make a profit) before being allowed to be tested on humans.

Evil drug companies. I agree with Tom on this, as much as I think he's an idiot. However, that being said, Brooke is trusting her regime to a (hopefully) more qualified person. Who actually has a Phd.

From what I've read, Scientologists do believe in medicine, but they are very much against mind-altering drugs. I don't know whether or not this would include anti-depressants... it may just be TCs personal interpretation.

Here's the official website, anyway: http://www.scientology.org/

Added: I really don't know much. I only had one look at the website the other day. But I've spoken to three Scientologists on Y!A and they were all very well spoken and polite, even with all the negative press. Not all high-profile people are good examples of their faith. I don't know whether TC is a representative example or not.

Technically scientologists are handiest *against* psychiatry and psychoactive medications, however, sickness within the cult can be viewed as evidence of doing things the cult would keep in mind unhealthy or that the one real therapy is through "auditing" which I have an understanding of falls someplace between psychotherapy and hypnosis. The arena external the cult is run by means of a small cabal of psychiatrists, financiers and journalists... Three. Any individual who disagrees with 1 or 2 is mendacity or is within the pay of the psychiatrists, and must *because they disagree* be some variety of criminal (as in actual criminal)... Don't you think you could act slightly bizarre? Cruise frequently has it convenient in comparison with usual participants.

They had a test tube baby?

Tom Cruise is the biggest flake to come out of scientology since L. Rob Hubbard himself.

First, I am admittedly unhip and do not purposely follow celebrity happenings, so forgive me that this is the first I have heard that Suri (or whoever) was/is a test tube baby.

Second, even if I did follow celebrities...Tom Cruise? He had one (and only one) watchable movie - The Firm. Everything else was horrifically stupid.

He's not against normal medicine. It's psychiatry and medication for mental health issues (like depression) that he's against.
