God calls things what they are and Satan used most often in scripture. Satan in Hebrew means 'adversary' -the enemy, opponent, antagonist, foe.
The other term that is used in the bible is devil, which means diabolical (from the Greek word diabolos)
When God created Satan, he was known as Lucifer
( Heylel), and that name is used only one time in the Bible. Probably before he went bad.

Isaiah 14:12) is Satan's argument which got him booted out of heaven. ( pretty good reason to start a war, I'd say), especially this last part what he said in his heart, " I will ascend above the heights of the clouds, I will be like the Most High. " ( verses 14)

As to why he revolted he was a amazingly beautiful, talented being and he held a position of authority in the angelic realm until iniquity was found in him. ( Ezekiel 28:15)

Where does it say in the Bible that Satan revolted? Satan was originally God's choir-master (Isa. 14:15). He became proud of his position, just as anyone could be proud to be in a place of honor. But he desired to be greater than he was, so God had to remove him from his position.

Satan still comes before God and talks to Him (see Job 1 and 2). Satan knows that he cannot defeat God, but he can get back at God in a different way--by attacking you and turning you against God. God loves you and it would pain Him to lose you to Satan.

Satan was created as a holy angel. Isaiah 14:12 possibly gives Satan’s pre-fall name as Lucifer. Ezekiel 28:12-14 describes Satan as having been created a cherubim, and was apparently the highest created angel. He became arrogant in his beauty and status, and decided he wanted to sit on a throne above that of God (Isaiah 14:13-14; Ezekiel 28:15; 1 Timothy 3:6). Satan’s pride led to his fall. Notice the many “I will…” statements in Isaiah 14:12-15. Because of his sin, God threw Satan out of heaven.

In the beginning of time, there was an assembly in Heaven and the LORD GOD took HIS SEAT and also 100 million divine beings-the incarnated Prophets and Saints. This event was first preceded by the coronation of the SON OF MAN as THE GOD OF THE EARTH AND THE WHOLE UNIVERSE by THE FATHER GOD. After this coronation by THE FATHER GOD, the assembly took their seats (Dan 7:9-10) and they opened the BOOKS-they reviewed the divine plans for the unending world of men. This scene is didactic as it gives a lot of instructions. One of them is that the whole history of ALFA TO THE OMEGA -the unending world have been wriitten like in a blueprint, in heaven before time began. Evenso, when Judas Iscariot betrayed the LORD JESUS CHRIST for HIS crucifixion HE did not stop Judas and instead said Let the scripture be fulfilled. It is because without the crucifixion there is no salvation for men per divine plan. And it is written in the books written before time began that the SAVIOR-THE LORD JESUS CHRIST will be a suffering servant-the MEEK GOD called THE LAMB OF GOD, instead as a triumphant and victorious general from battle. And HE won that battle as the crucifixion looked like a defeat but that defeat became victory to all mankind. Similarly, the battle in heaven where satan had a revolt will not really happened in heaven which is a perfect celestial place but as the LORD JESUS CHRIST said let the scripture be fulfilled that if without Judas which in this case represent the evil one, there is no salvation for men per divine plan. The prophet Daniel also wrote what was written must be fulfilled. Thus, the battle in heaven is like a court battle done by the Books but which is a battle without hate. Thus, everyone and everything are bounded by THE WILL OF GOD as they were written in the Books. THANKS GOD; FEAR GOD;PRAISE GOD;GLORIFY GOD;HONOR GOD;LOVE GOD and WORSHIP GOD.

He was made to be the opposite of what is good and he does not have any choice. That is the only reason.
Blessedrobert, read again Isaiah and you will see that he is not Satan. Satan is an evil spirit. Lucifer is a man...Isaiah 14:16-17

He wanted to be more powerful than God. He wanted all the worship that God has. God put Lucifer beside his right hand. God knew what was going to happen. That why God made satan to use freewill. A choice to follow the Lord or burn in the lake with satan.

God wanted mankind (Adam and Eve) to live in ignorance. Lucifer (the light bearer) equates to Prometheus in Greek Mythology- he defied God and brought mankind knowledge and wisdom via the apple.

Then, after Adam and Eve were expelled from Eden, Lucifer wanted Angels to directly interact with mankind to help them on their path, so that people would always be able to see them, interact with them, and thereby know of God's existence.

God wanted to remain at a distance, and rely on blind faith- that humans should believe in God with no proof at all, and be punished if they do not believe.

So, Lucifer rebelled- he did not like how God was handling humans. And one third of all the angels agreed with him and rebelled as well.

I'm not sure about the other religions, but in Islam, we believe Satan disobeyed Allah (swt) because when asked by God to respect Adam, Satan claimed he was better and superior to Adam. Satan was made of fire and water and Adam was made of clay, and this made Satan think he was better. He disobeyed God and that's obviously a very bad and unwise choice.

Satan was greedy and wanted the same amount of power as God. He wanted to be God because he thought he was better than God. And, no, Satan is not the president of the United States. I'l give you a hint: his initials are H.C. and his last name is Clinton.

evil is irrational... I would not count on Satan not thinking he could pull it off...

it was pride... and lack of true love of God
and a desire to glorify himself not God

could be he heard those people made from dust were destined to become higher than the angels someday as the 'bride of Christ' and he was pridefully insulted and not willing to help man, but rather struck out at man bringing death into th eworld as a result of sin

man was made to go from dust to glory and perhaps Satan couldn't handle it
