They "feel" safer driving one, when in fact, an SUV may not necessarily be safer than say, a Honda Accord or Toyota Camry.
Smaller cars have more active safety measures, i.e. nimble handling, the fact that they're easy to control, easy to stop, etc. SUVs and other large vehicles have more passive safety features, such as the sheer mass of the car.
In either case, I would prefer to drive a modern Honda Civic with curtain airbags over a Ford Expedition or Lincoln Navigator. The Civic will be able to avoid an accident much easier.

Well, I do not think they are buying them for the great gas mileage they do not get, it is probably for the room and if they have a bad back getting in and out of an SUV is alot easier on the back than the small fuel efficient cars.

Gee I'm so sorry to upset you.
But my old (Made in Japan) Prius wouldn't make it up the driveway, (http://www.consumeraffairs.com/news04/2007/05/prius_traction.html#top)
to the homes of some of my rural clients.
Nor did it have enough cargo space for my needs. I had to trade it in for one of those ugly obnoxiouse SUV's. At a hefty price, I might add.
And I have to pay outragous fuel bills (at my own expense) so I could continue to deliver all the food that I collect from the food pantrys & my generous neighbors to the homebound, veterans, elderly, & disabled people on my volunteer route.
How very arrogant & egotistical of me.

I bought my 5'3" wife one when our second son was born...For one reason. If, and I prayed to God that it did not happen, she was in an accident, MY family would be safe. In 1990 a drunk in a crappy foreign car crossed the line and my wife and two kids were hit head on in a Suburban. Not one scratch or bruse on ANY of my family. The drunk just got out of prison where I filed charges against him. His econo box was destroyed and he spent months in the hospital and then Jail.
You have the right to drive whatever you wish in this county. That is YOUR right, but I will protect my family as I see fit. That is my right. Yes, I still own that Suburban, that birth to grave is more "Green" than a precis that everyone is so thrilled with. Do the research as to how DAMAGING to the envoironment those Hybrids are! Then you talk about SUV's.

well i know that when im in a small car, i feel like im gonna sink into the ground. i feel short. i hate feeling short. i like bigger cars because i dont feel like im gonna get squished like a bug. and they are making enviromentally friendly suvs now. i predict that in the future enviromentally-friendly cars will become more common. or more people could take the bus.

Freedom of choice, freedom of expression, free market, personal taste, all those things that you believe in, but sadly you do not want for others.
