if he has fleas i suggest taking care of that problem and give it a few days to see if it gets any better. i don't know if cats can get them, i think they can, but when i had rabbits i was told to watch out for mites (sp?) in their ears...that can cause quite a nasty mess. my dog also had troubles with flys bothering her ears (it was NASTY looking) and we where given some over the counter spray that you just spritz on her back that caused the flys to stay away so maybe you should try going to a pet store and see what they say. but i would defiently take care of the flea sitation and see what that does.

Get something for the fleas and have a good look at his ears - if they are dirty brown and waxy in there it's probably ear mites which will make him scratch. ( btw they also have a very distintive smell) You can buy stuff for ear mites from the petshop.
If they aren't like that and he is going out it's probably a fight injury - unneutered male cats of his age will be going out "on the pull" and getting in fights. Fight injuries get infected easily so your best bet would be to go back to the vet. If you aren't happy with the vet you saw last time find another one in your area. A good vet will discuss the options with you and not start injecting things without your agreement.

If any of the injections/pills were an antibiotic: antibiotics kill infectious bacteria as well as good bacteria and make the body more prone to fungal infections (in humans and animals) because there is no bacteria to eat the fungus. It's probably a fungal infection of the ear that he scratched and made it sore and scabby. Call the vet and see if lotramin is safe for cats. Otherwise, he'll need a prescription anti-fungal med. It will probably be a topical ointment or pill. Also, if he hasn't been to a vet in a long time, they'll give him his vaccine boosters, but since he was just there, that'll probably one less shot for him to get again.

It could be fleas and scratching. Buy some advantage or frontline to treat him or Revolution, which ia a little more expensive but also treats mites and ticks. If he is an outdoor cat, he could be getting in fights. If he is not neutered and outside, he is definitely getting in fights. The ears are the first thing cats hit when they fight. Either way, he should be neutered (not implying any of this is true...just looking at all possibilities).
Good luck, hope this helps.

hi there,
If it's not fleas, it's probably the food. F.feed him less food anyway, an 11 month old cat shouldn't be too fat (mealtimes, two times a day and ignore the begging) and nothing with corn or soy or any kind of gluten. Get a high quality food. He might be scratching because of allergies or intolerance to the food. That goes for the glands too.
It's worth the money to pay for the right treatments if you can afford it. If not find someone who can adopt him. There's lots of cat ppl out there who will be able to do this for him.
Good luck. tabbies are the best.

You really should take your cat to the vet. I know it can be expensive but why not phone round and get some idea of costs (ask about a specific procedure e.g. spaying as this allows you to compare prices). If you have a really good pet shop they can sometimes offer advice. Failing that have a look at the following sites

www.thecatsite.com
www.vetinfo4cats.com/
Once you have this problem sorted consider getting pet insurance. I pay less than £10 to have both my cats insured for fees up to £7,000, with a £50 excess) with Marks and Spencers but you should use moneysupermarket.com to get a comparison for your own cat.

It could be ear mites, they can really irritate the ear and cause the cat to scratch at it until it is raw. Look up your cats symptoms on the internet and compare it to the pictures on the web to get a sense of what may be going on. You may have to take him in but your vet may give you cream to try if it sounds like mites. What you can do is get a black piece of paper, take a little crud out of the eat carefully and place it on the black surface. If you see little white things moving then it most likely is a mite issue. I hope everything turns out ok!!

If it's fleas, get some Advantage or Frontline and put it on him according to directions. If it's ear mites, the inside of his ears will look dirty with black wax. Most pet shops carry over-the-counter treatments that work quite well. If you can't get to a pet shop today, clean the inside of his ears with your pinky wrapped in a warm, wet washcloth, then put some mineral oil on a cotton swab and clean them again. NOTE: The mineral oil is not a substitute for medicine. It's just for cleaning.

It sounds to me like it is either ear mites or fleas. It sounds like you will probably have to make another trip to the vet. Are the scabs inside or outside of the ear? If the ears are really dirty, it is probably ear mites. They get deep down inside of the ear and create dirt. It can actually make a kitten or cat go deaf. If they are outside the ear and he is scratching and can make the ear infected. Then you will need shots. I would get it looked at before it gets too bad.

I even have moved countless cases with my 2 cats, and that i will inform you that it is going to likely be demanding no count what. the element I did exchange into i began out putting them in a cat provider a pair of week in the previous I moved so as that they have got been use to the provider. once I have been given to the hot living house, i could make specific that a million) The cat did no longer get out, and 2) provide the cat a splash extra interest at first. wait and notice and enable her have get admission to to the provider if it makes her sense secure. solid success!!
