flash--nikon best
high iso--canon
body image stabilizer--sony
bang for buck--pentax

main suggestions
-go to a store and hold the camera(example..some people hate the feel of a rebal, others with smaller hands or who want something light think its the best out thre, since you will be holding the camera while using it this is important)

-what lens do you need? canon has more telephoto lenses then anyone if you need to shoot sports or wold life, nikon and sony has high quality wide angles avalible, canon has more lenses with "IS" ehile other brands have body "IS" so that prime lenses can be used aswell with "IS"

whenever you ask this question tell people what kind of things you want to photograph, so they can also make a lens suggestion since i assume your not just buying a body

sony cameras are O.K. but when you use them at higher ISO's the image quality is very crappy. Ive always been a Nikon owner and love Nikon's,but I think Canons got them beat in the digital market.Sony uses Carl Zeiss Len's which are considered to be some of the best lenses made, but when they are used with a camera that has an image sensor as crappy as the ones used in the Sony's the lens wont matter much.Go with the Canons.....check out dpreviews on the web and you can compare Nikon,Canon,Sony Images side by side....you'll see

You should also consider the Olympus Evolt line of camera. Their E500 and E510 are standouts and can match any of the brands on the market. They are cheaper than the Sony Alpha and better. The E510 is similarly priced as the Canon Xti, but more advanced.

Olympus were the first to introduce Dust Reduction mechanisms in their SLR cameras. Canon has since copied this concept and placed it in their recent models.

One final thing is that Olympus cameras are noted for their life like reproduction of a scene. They are very accurate at recording true skin tones and their kit lens are better than most brands.

I don't know where Sony gets their lenses so I'm partial to the original camera manufacturers. I'm also a Nikon person but Canon is equivalent and has been since the 1980's.

I got Canon 350D. Worth every penny. I think Canon and Nikon leads in the DSLR stuff. Check out dpreview.com and/or cnet.com fr reviews and stuff. Good luck.

Most tend to go with Canon or Nikon

Canon uses Compact Flash cards

Nikon uses SD cards

Canon uses edge sharpness which can mottle solid colors

Nikon uses edge dithering which makes solid smooth but text can be a bit soft looking.
