Depends on the odor. If it's from a mess, first clean it completely up. (For example, sour milk spilled on the carpet.) Use baking soda, or vinegar and water, if appropriate. Then, set up a fan to blow out -- I hope into a room that does have a window.
After that, you can try covering up any remaining odor with sprays like Fabreeze, or incense or other room freshners.

Shampoo the carpet, the odor may be coming from that, and if not, it will have absorbed some of the odor. When it is dry, sprinkle arm n hammer baking soda heavily onto the carpet and let sit for a day or so before vacuuming it up. Arm n hammer also makes scented carpet deodorizer, but I've found the old fashined stuff that you use in your fridge or for cooking will work the best. If you have any furniture in the room, it would be wise to remove them from the room completely and clean them while you are waiting for the carpet to dry. For upholstery, you can buy carpet and upholstery cleaner, just make sure you scrub them thoroughly. And again, after they are dry, sprinkle them with more arm n hammer. It may also be beneficial to paint the walls as well, or use a light solution of bleach or amonia with water to wash them off. I hope this helps!

Depending on the severity and cause of the odor, a mildly odiferous room could be handled by any or all of the above suggestions.
If we are talking about something really bad, that has absorbed into the carpet/baseboards, etc. you may need some heavyduty, but permanent solutions to a really horrific odor.
A few calls to carpet cleaning companies should get you what you need. Ask them for a reference for "crime scene cleanup".
Yep, I am talking about the guys that clean up dead-body fluids and matter left behind at a crime scene. They often start as carpet cleaners but segue into crime scene cleanup for the big bucks, but they DON'T say that in their yellow pages ads.
The industrial-strength ionizers these guys have will kill the most disgusting odor in less than 24 hours, NEVER to return.
Works magnificently. I had a cousin borrow my car when he wanted to go crabbin'. He left the bait (a pack of chicken necks) in my trunk, in August, in Galveston, Texas, for 3 days. The pack of neck blew up in my trunk from the build-up of gasses. The smell was off-the-chart, like there was a dead body, and NOTHING worked to even slightly reduce it, no matter how I scrubbed or what I scrubbed it with. Intense rot like that just clings, which is why people can't sell cars where someone offed themselves or someone else violently, with fluid loss.
The ionizer machine got 100% of the odor out, in less than 6 hours, never to return. I was flabbergasted. It seemed impossible. So if it is a really nasty, persistant stink you have, you may need an ionizer. I ended up buying one, I was so impressed. It works wonders on mildew, vomit, and cat pee, too! And all you have to do is turn it on, close the door, and come back later.

Set up a fan and blow the air into an area that does have ventilation. If there is a mess, clean it up. If there is carpet down on the ground, and you think the smell is coming from there, remove the carpet. Leave baking soda out in the room, it absorbs smells. Lastly you may try actually cleaning the walls, but remember if there are no windows be careful of cleaning fumes.

You may need to use an air cleaner. Try using Arm & Hammer carpet odor eliminator, let it set a bit, then vacuum, and put plug-in room freshners in their. But it would be a good idea to get behind the culprit of the odor and eliminate it which may mean cleaning carpets.

Truly, taking out the old carpeting and fabric items will help the most. Sometimes cleaning them works, but when it doesn't, it is going to cost you again to replace them.
