The Jeep Cherokees are very WELL known for off road ability. If you have the full time four wheel drive option, they are even greater in rain and snow. Cheap to repair and the 4 liter, if maintained, is good for over 200,000 miles. Have two at that level. Actually, they are lighter than Most other SUV's.

Not sure about the Cherokees but I own a Liberty and they do slide a lot if you're not careful. You can always put it into 4 wheel drive if you have lots of snow but you can't take corners or streetcar tracks fast at all. I like the space and driving higher up then cars but unless you're going to buy snow tires I would take the speeds slow. As far as being reliable they work fine. A trick is to always carry a big bag of cat litter in the back so to add extra weight in the rear of the vehicle. Also if you are in a jam and need extra traction the litter will come in handy.

Jeep Cherokees are great in the snow, that's all I drove this past winter in the bad snow storms. I had no problems. My sister has a Liberty and it was absolutely worthless.

Jeep still sells a 2wd jeep. There are very poor in snow and ice due to weight of the jeep. Some of the 4wd models have the same problem because of the weight of those models.
