For Windows:
You can get something called "7-Zip". This does pretty much everything you'll need it to. Remember, though, that Windows comes with a built-in Zip utility that will work with most files.

For Mac:
Mac OS X comes with a built in "BomArchiveHelper", which will happily open most files. There is something called "The Unarchiver", though, which is totally free, and will open almost anything.

my winzip program worked for free for years. it asks you if you want to register it but if you say no it still works.
go to www.cnet.com or www.downloads.com and get the latest version for free again.

Winrar is one of the best, albeit you do have to pay for it. It does have a free trial, though.
