The Amish are good people. Yes they are backwards to most of us. But don't deceive yourself into thinking they are afraid of technology-which is what most think. They are afraid of sin. Pure and simple. They have isolated themselves from the behavior of a sinful society. Their lack of technology is one of the costs. They would rather live a harder life than chance the results of a little sin. They should be respected oven any group in this country.
Have you ever heard of crime in Amish country? Absolutely not-unless it was done by an outsider. These gentle people have hearts you would not believe.
Mainstream Christianity has already gone way too far towards a more worldly lifestyle to turn back now. In fact probably 75% of people who claim to be Christian are not even aware of what is required to be a Chrsitian-and thats a fact.

I think they are okay. They hold the same views as other Christians regarding the trinity, heaven/hell, and baptism (as an adult), but I often wonder how they can be a light unto the world (as we are told to be) if they live in a closed community.
In John 17:15, Jesus talking to the Father said " I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one."
They (some Amish sects) don't use electricity or other modern conveniences because they believe it will bring them in touch with the world, and thus be polluted by this.
I have heard about spousal abuse and child abuse being in the community on the Internet, but one will never know if these are true accounts or not.
But in answer to your question, we are here to stay, so no, there will be no little villages created if things go downhill in America. The Word of God is eternal.

the Amish are Christians who have chosen a way of living that is a model for others. From what I know there is nothing fundamentally wrong with their beliefs, it is just their interpretation and the way they choose to follow that interpretation Certainly with all the busy-ness of the world it's harder to focus on any form of spirituality.
I don't join them because I was called to be in the world if not of it. I appreciate the life style and the commitment that they have to maintaining it, but at what cost? The world is full of hurting people who I believe want to hear the word that can heal.
Technology is not a threat to the Christian community, but withdrawing to our own little cloistered communities would negate the very mandate we have as followers of Christ, to reach the world with his truth. We can't do that if we aren't in the world.
In every great society that no longer exists, in every case where there was a time of healing, is was Christians who were working to do what was right and true.
I can't speak for others, but I'm sticking around because I have some wonderful truth to share!

They are extremely fundamental Christians who stand behind their beliefs, however absurd they may be. It takes a lot of courage for them to turn their back on mainstream society and culture. However, I wouldn't want to live my life as they do. You can't miss what you never had. However, for Christians living in the mainstream of society to develop their own villages would send many in culture shock I believe.

Amish are very interesting. No electricity, motor vehicles... Their lives are simple. I consider them fortunate in many ways, they make their own clothes, farm for their food, they don't pay high utility bills or spend on the rising gas prices. If we were all left to our own rescources, fleeing to the wilderness or as you put it, going off to our own villages, the Amish would be the last standing survivors.
Have you ever seen the Left Behind Series? I think Christians may one day have to flee to follow the faith. If you haven't seen the series you will find it interesting.

As a Christian (Roman Catholic) I feel the same way about the Amish as I feel about the Protestants, Druze, Jews, Pagans, Mormons, Buddhists, Muslims, Hindus, etc: To each his (or her) own! They can believe whatever they'd like! Just because I don't share or agree with their beliefs doesn't mean I can't respect them. After all, Jesus said, "Judge not lest you be judged", "Love thy neighbor", and "Don't cast the first stone". We are all brothers and sisters. Live and let live!

I think they are a little extreme but I see no wrong in their life style. I watched an Amish farmer plow his fields with a team of Clydesdales and he covered as much ground as a modern tractor does. God blesses them

James 5 says that rich Christians don't pay their lawn mowers. They kill innocent men who were not opposing them.
I don't know what this says about those who would mow lawns for a rich Christian. How much land does Christianity own anyway? Who owns the Amish land?
