Then I just start talking to him/her and calling him/her by his/her name. Just keep repeating the name all the time. I also teach tham that having a collar on is not a bad thing. I usually put a light weight collar on and then pretty quick the puppy will just ignore it.
Make sure that you socialize your puppy and get him/her used to all types of people and children espically.
Another thing is to TOUCH THE PUPPY ALL OVER. THEY NEED TO LEARN THAT HAVING THEIR EARS PULLED ON LIGHTLY OR THEIR PAWS TOUCHED OR LIFTED UP IS FUN. I ALSO GIVE MY DOGS A HUG AROUND THEIR BODY. PET THEM ALL OVER THEIR BODY. Also make sure that you can pick up your dog if you need to and the dog will not snap. If the dog ever get loose - this may help some one catch the dog.
Teach your puppy that it is ok to pull away the food (if need be) and open their mouth and stick your finger in their mouth. You might need to pull out a bone some time.

Don't let the puppy get mouthy either and chew. I usually just grab their snout and say NO!!!
