I have heard numerous times that installing a K&N air filter and adding Flowmasters or an exhaust system called "flo-pro" will improve gas mileage

You have a Triton V-10 engine which puts out 310 hp (231 kW) at 4250 rpm with 425 ft·lbf (576 Nm) of torque at 3250 rpm. It's a big engine, hence is thirsty.
A Power Chip with reprogram your onboard computer with a more refined program to control the fuel injection. Hence saving fuel. A K&N Air Filter (Depending on the type) Will give you better "air charge" which will result in denser air being sent to the engine and giving you more power, without costing you fuel. And than the FloMaster exhaust will let the exhaust be more free flowing and release the backpressure that may be choking your engine, and therefore hurting it's performance.

Tell me you didn't buy such a vehicle expecting to get great fuel mileage? If you wanted mileage, you should have gotten a Focus w/ a 4 cyl. engine.
OK, at least you didn't get a 4WD model but between the 10 cylinders and the rr axle ratio, which is prob. low, it won't matter much what you do, the best mpg you might get will be 12-14. How much weight do you usually haul w/ it? Reducing weight and keeping tires properly inflated and avoiding jackrabbit starts will all help.

regular maintanence is the best way to save gas milage, aftermarket add-ons are a scam and your lucky if you get 1 or 2 mpg gains, also remember short trips and towing make milage worse, some times switching to a synthetic oil may help i am not saying it does in every case but it is a cheaper alternative to buying exhaust and "high flow" air filters, and performance add-ons, also make sure your tires are at the manufactures recomended psi, which is on the drivers side door or on the b-pillar on the drivers side

The chip is a good idea. I'd also look into letting the thing "breathe".
By this I mean air filters/filter boxes and exhaust.

installing a k&n filter and a superchip will improve your mileage some, but you're not going to get compact car mpg. you can get the superchip for a great price at autoanything.com

don't expect much with k&n and exhaust. maybe 2 or 3 mpg if you're lucky. still it would be an improvement.
