ok i have ALWAYS wondered about this.

i love eggplant.

once when i was little a well meaning aunt of mine told me that eggplant is not part of a macrobiotic diet and that it can throw your balance off and make you feel bad and it is basically bad for your health. this is because it is supposed to be toxic or something.

this really has ruined it for me every time i eat eggplant. i think about how it is bad for me.

has anyone heard of this eggplant macrobiotic thing?

is eggplant really bad for you?

thanks.

Yes, your aunt was right. Macrobiotic diets philosophy is based on oriental principles: yin and yang.
Yin- passive,silent,cold and dark.
Yang-active,hot and healthy.
In this diet tomatoes and eggplants must be avoided, as they are extremely yin.
I know that leaves of eggplants is toxic and that you don't feed birds like parrots with eggplants because for them is toxic. For some insects eggplants is toxic too.

I don't know how eggplant fits into a macrobiotic diet. What I have heard is that eggplant, tomatoes and potatoes are all members of the nightshade family, and related to deadly nightshade. Some people think this means they contain a chemical that's bad for you.

I'd say experience is your best guide. Trust your body. If eggplant is bad for YOU, it won't taste good to you. If you are craving it, then very likely it contains something you need.
Just be aware of your body after you eat it for a while, and keep an eye out for signs of problems.

Just learn how to read pet food ingredients, so you can know yourself what is bad and what isn't. Vets get a very basic course in nutrition, plus Hills is very influential to vets, even paying for some hospitals medical equipment and vet seminars. Ingredients are easy to determine what's a good food. First get grain free. That will narrow down your choices a lot. Second make sure the first 2-3 ingredients are a named protein. Third, look for ingredients that are harmful like BHT, BHA, menadione, unspecified animal protein (ie: "animal fat", "meat by product") and I avoid artificial colors. Fourth thing is to look at how many fillers are in the food and try to get as little of them as possible. Fillers are beet juice, pea protein, tomatoe pomace, etc. Last look at the company itself, look at where it sources it's ingredients and where it is manufactured and what is it's track record. There are many choices with a wide price range that fits the above. Cannidae is a good low cost one. Fromm is better than Science Diet even though some formulas have grains.
