Your eyes are cameras. If you are nearsighted, then your focus is relatively close. If you are farsighted, then your eyes are weak and you'll need to 'work' to see at a distance plus work harder to see closer. If the overall lens system is spherical, as in a glass basketball, then you'll be focused at some distance and it's easy to correct to other distances. If you are emetropic or normal sighted, eg. focused at optical infinity, then anything closer requires that you use the muscles inside your eye to bend the lens and focus close.
If you have astigmatism, then you have a lens system more like a football (american), where you'll have a flat lens at one angle, and 90 degrees away, a more curved radius. The flat portion focus is relatively far away compaired with the shorter or more curved lens. When you get glasses, either the tight curve meridian is weakened or the flat one is made more powerful so that all the meridians are focused at the same plane. Then that plane is moved either towards the lens (made more powerful), or moved further out (made less powerful).

To see closer, such as reading or a computer or ?, you bend the lens within the eye. If you are young, it's easy to bend the lens. As the lens gets older, it gets bigger and bigger till around 45 or so, it's hard to bend, so one gets readers.

Glasses don't 'weaken' your eyes, just make it so the image is focused on the retina.

Yes.

Your eyes will weaken whether or not you wear glasses. This is because there is only one focal length involved. Your eyes are meant to be moved and to see many things, at many distances, some close, some far, and many in between. Normal activity keeps your eyes moving and re-focussing constantly.

When you are dealing with a computer your eyes and eye muscles become strained in having to maintain the focus at the same place over long periods of time.

The effects are made worse by glare, so it is advisable to have a non-reflective screen or an anti-glare cover for the screen.

If your glasses are not meant to be worn while on the computer, then yes. You should only wear them when you're supposed to. I'm nearsighted - things far away are kind of blurry - and I'm only supposed to use my glasses for driving unless I really need them.

No, but I know a few people whose sight had gotten better over time by wearing contacts. (Because they form to your eye.)

My doctor said to keep mine off (glasses) when I'm on the computer.

Yes it does. Using computers puts a strain on your eyes.... contributing to the deterioration of your eyesight.

However, there are things that you can do to reduce this strain. These articles give some recommendations:
