Good point. Let's stop worrying about something so silly and instead work on fixing the problems of the world.

I dislike people spreading lies to further their religious interests. While generally not an issue in Europe, in the US this has come to more of a head (see, for instance, the Kansas evolution hearings http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kansas_evolution_hearings ).
I think there is already a private school pushing young earth creationism in the UK, is this what you want happening everywhere? Do you want your children to be taught these things?
Because it doesn't stop there. With the young earth theory comes a whole set of pseudo-scientific ramblings about the descent of man and all life, flood theories, water canopies, it is the death of science. "God did it" is intellectual suicide. It ends the conversation. You can't ask any further questions or find any other answers, nor can it be verified or measured in any way. It is anti-science.

okay i never got the all fuss either but i don't agree with folks who answered that believing one way or another makes you a miliant who kills those who don't believe the way you do either.
the smart guy who answered we need to know this so we can use the earth's resoures wisely made sense to me.
people don't neeed a religion to kill each other. not all wars were fought over religion. i do believe greed was a big war starter, wanting other's land and resources. a lot of time God was just an excuse to go after the land.
but it makes no sense to say that if i believe in creation that i 'll start a genocide. the same could be said for those who believe in evolution. after all the strong survive to better the species and the weak die off; why wouldn't they try to speed up the proess by killing off the weak?
come on i thought you non believers were all logic. where's the logic in your answers?

Good for him I am not going to hate. Manchester United only give such a lucrative contract to players that are PROVEN not saying Lucas Moura will NOT in the future be worth that salary but this is football SPORTS full stop! Big salaries are part of the trend!

For those interested in investigating the natural world, it is quite important. The age of the Earth is important in evolution and molecular biology, cosmology, astronomy, astrophysics, geoscience, physics, anthropology, history, and just about every other field of inquiry. To say that it doesn't matter is to say you don't care about just about any academic subjects.
By the way, every one of those fields (except anthropology, for obvious reasons) includes evidence that the Earth is about 4.5 billion years old.

You are absolutely correct. It really does not matter. People who insist on using their intellect to disprove or prove anything that happened prior to their own existance are foolish. I am a believer and a follower of God but it is not because I read about him in a book or because someone else taught me about Him. Why He reached out to me several years ago I have no idea...but I do know that He is very real because we now have a truly personal relationship. I can not prove this to anyone...nor would I try. All people must respond to Him or not....their choice.

We need to understand the world in order to effectively use its resources. The age of the various features of the earth is an essential part of that understanding.

Right wing Christian fundamentalist politicians and those pandering to them.
It affects your life right here right now in that they are still trying to dictate how you live your life, how the younger members of your family are educated and their attempts to Immanentize the eschaton could have a major effect on your future!
OK?

Big effect. This belief can effect how you look at volcanos, energy (oil & fossil fuels), health of the planet, just so many different scientific disciplines.
You pursue truth because it makes a difference - even when it seems that it doesn't.

Well, it can affect my life....
If youre silly enough to beleive that the world is less than 6000 years old, then you are gulllible enough to beleive just about anyting - including when your religious leaders call for a Crusade against non-beleivers. Then, my life becomes affected...
