The actual call is free, meaning you are not paying for long distance. However, you pay for airtime whether it is local or long distance. Same reason you don't pay for local calls on a landline, but do on a cell phone.

Between Airtime, and Roaming charges (if you're placing the call off your home network) - "free" calls can be quite expensive. At least you don't have to pay long distance charges...

Just another way of cell phone companies gouging us. Just like on Verizon's family plan; someone leaves a message and you play it back during peak minutes....you are charged those minutes on every different message.
