It may not be able to be resized, depending upon what metal it is made of. Yellow gold is never a problem for resizing - either larger or smaller.
However, sterling silver rings with rhodium plating are a problem. Also, some supposedly white gold rings are also plated with rhodium. Perhaps that's what your bf remembers being told from when he bought the ring. Go check with a local jeweller and get their opinion.

Insist on it being resized. You don't need a new one especially since you like the original one.
Tell him you'd rather have that money spent on the ceremony or honeymoon or other expense rather than another engagement ring.
Or just go out and get it resized without him knowing, and surprise him.

It almost sounds as though he may have bought what he could afford at the time and may not be happy with it now. Things may be better for him now and he wants to get you something extra special. What if you agreed to a new ring from him but have it custom made and use the gold and diamonds from the one that you already have. That way you will still have the pieces of the old one combined with the new one. Something to think about and maybe discuss with him.

Go resize it yourself and tell him to worry more about buying the wedding band :-)

my bestfriend used her engagement ring as a pendant, (she's afraid they'll mess it up if she resize them) and her husband bought her a new engagement ring to wear.

sometimes a ring can get mangled a bit when it's resized... or maybe he's just embarrassed?

Is it not real? That could be his issue.
I'd forgive him though. Make him buy a bigger one.
I love emerald cut diamonds. Unique.
