Just look at these answers above and you will see. Fat people are viewed as lazy, weak-willed, sloppy, and too stupid to know better.
The only professional who answered knows that that's not true.
People think that all that's needed is to "get some willpower", or "grow a backbone", or even "go back to the pig sty, oink, oink".
They think that fat people have no will-power or self-discipline. If only they knew the truth.
Obviously, if it were that simple, no one would be obese.
It's like telling a drug addict or a smoker, "Well, just quit!"
It's not that simple, and only simpleminded people think it is.
Any one who cares to, can do the research and find out that bariatric medicine is far more complex than doctors used to think. There are dozens of factors, up to and including what your mother ate while she was pregnant, and her emotions while you were in the womb, that influence why a person eats more than is healthy for them. Childhood abuse, infant separation issues, the "demand feeding vs. scheduled feeding" debate for infants, the way the body processes sugars, and much more all affect why a person gains weight. Even the taste buds of obese people are different, less sensitive than those of normal weight people, so they may need to eat more to trigger the brain's satiety signals.
I think thin people who judge fat people are trying to lift themselves up by pushing someone else down. Or maybe they feel threatened when someone who doesn't follow their rules.

The MEDIA has brain washed the public into thinking that thin is the only "pretty" for a body.
Through the ages, there have been era's where weight either wasn't an issue or where being FAT was considered the epitome of beauty!!
Therefore, the age we live in plays a big part in how we view each other.
As far as medical costs being high due to over weight people, bulimia, abusing diet pills, the use of steroids to alter the physique, anorexia, and complications from plastic surgery, carry as much of the burden for the health care cost as dose being over weight.
Yes! You will be healthier, and have more energy if you lose weight. But being a "healthy" person does not exclude you from heart attack, stroke, aneurysm, cancer, and other illnesses contracted every year by Perfectly healthy, even pro athletic, people.
Feel good about your self the way you are and for WHO you are, and the rest will follow!
Best of luck!

People sometimes say things without thinking first. Others will often say something because they do care about a person's well-being. When it comes to discussing a person's weight, let's face it, there is no easy way to approach it. Some people actually mean well but, are uncertain as to how to approach the issue. Other people, will flat out say what they think, without giving any regards to how it is being received. Don't let the people actually hurt you, even though their words do. Try to keep in mind that words are just words and not everyone means ill will toward you. Hope this helps.

Not sure WHY this is, but it is ... normal-weight people think that fat people are lazy, stupid, unfriendly, incapable of learning, etc, just about anything negative that you can think of. AND this attitude is affecting normal-weight people at younger & younger ages. It used to be that "professionals" (teachers, psychologists, etc) thought that kids younger than 8 couldn't *possibly* think that way, but they do... as young as kindergartners. Doesn't make it right, though...
Here is a one person's opinion, a quote from www.wilderdom.com/personality/L7-1EvolutionaryPsychology.html, a Evolutionary Psychology page:
"Obesity in western society is quite readily explained by evolutionary principles. For most of human evolution, obtaining sufficient food and nutrition was a daily battle, and daily life was physically rigorous. Thus, the human body become highly efficient at storing excess energy from excess food intake. However, the dramatic cultural evolution in Western lifestyles has made copious amounts of food readily available at the same time as reducing physical daily demands to very low levels. The result is that people in Western society are now exhibiting all-time record levels of obesity and related eating disorders. 61% of Americans are overweight or obese - what's more - the incidence of obesity increased 61% in the period from 1991 to 2000. Likewise Australia is one of the most obese countries in the world, with obesity in children increasing by 100% in the past 10 years; 25% of Australian children are overweight or obese. Obviously obesity is not particularly adaptive, but cultural evolution has outstripped genetic evolution, giving rise to this phenomenon (Feist & Feist, 2002)."
Hope that helps.

sorry but if you want an answer you have to expect sort of mean opionated ones so here goes:
people make overweight people not feel so good first of all- because its sick looking, people shouldnt let themselves get fat. and also, its really unhealthy, its just stupid to be overweight when a diet and excersize will make you so much healthier and not to mention alot more attractive! your right, its not peoples business- but honestly.. pretty much nothing is other peoples business its not going to stop them from saying what they think. people who are skinny just look down on overweight people because their overall image is lazy and fat and.. gross. just some EFFORT and workouts and those overweight people could be hot and skinny! why cant they just do it!

It does effect everyone, maybe not directly- but indirectly. I hate to see obese people. I think it's disgusting. Generally, these people did this to themselves by over-eating and being lazy. It's also a symbol of self disrespect. They don't care about themselves (obviously) or else they would diet and exercise and try to prolong their life, instead of shoving food down their throats. I have several people in my family that are overweight, so I am speaking from experience. I'm not just being judgemental. It's pure laziness and lack of self respect.

I am a registered and licensed dietitian with a masters degree and I will tell you and anyone...it is hard to lose weight. Someone who is 400 pounds...with diet and exercise alone...they are looking at a hard hard battle to get down to a healthy weight. I am not saying to look at overweight people and pity them. I am saying to look past that weight. No one knows how hard it is to lose weight until they try it. And for those of us who are trying to lose 5 pounds before august and the beach...losing 100 pounds is no compairson and not even realist to compare. Props to any overweight person who is making an effor and props to those of us who suppor them. It is hard to go to the gym being overweight and have people look at you on the treadmill and props to those that try it. People that treat those who are overweight different are people that themselves have low self-esteem. They stare and talk to make themself feel better. This is something everyone says and those overweight people might not believe it anymore. But I am telling you it is true. I am a skinny girl and when I see another skinny girl with beautiful hair and nice clothes...a part of me want to say somehting mean just to remind myself that I am attractive too...so it works for people who are skinny and don't feel good about themself...they see an overweight person and boo-ya say something bad about them or stare.
Props to those who are overweight and feel good about themselves!!
Oh and by the way..smokers raise the cost of health insurance, oh oh and people who drink...and people who eat at mcdonalds all day....and people who don't drink milk and are prediposed to osteoporosis and what about all those skinny pretty girls in tanning beds and laying out...they will rise the cost of health insurance with skin cancer...lets stare of them

They see obesity as a result of laziness and poor self-control. It does hurt the economy partly due to the increase of medical problems resulting in higher premiums, etc.

When you are overweight, it just shows you are lazy and too undevoted to something to do something. It's more the fact of atitude than appearance once you get into the business world. If you are in good shape, it shows you are willing to work hard for something you want.
