Depends on whether it's a black bear or a grizzly bear. Black bears climb, grizzlies are better runners. If you've somehow managed to get a black bear chasing you, toss something you are carrying -- preferably something with food in it -- in the other direction, then run downhill. If you're nowhere near a hill, drop down in a fetal position with your hands covering your neck. If you're lucky, he'll sniff you in certain areas, possibly swipe at your head or back, then leave.

If it's a grizzly, same thing -- toss the pack, then climb up the nearest tree, as high as you can. No tree? Drop into that fetal position.

Best thing is to avoid hiking in bear country when bears emerge from hibernation in the spring and are their most ravenous. If you must hike in bear country in spring, do not carry food, do not wear deodorant or cologne or perfume, and constantly sing or talk or wear bear bells to alert the bears to your presence -- they will shy away unless you really smell like food. If you're camping in bear country, tie your food way up in a tree, at least 15 feet from your camp site. Do not sleep in the clothes in which you have cooked and eaten, and keep these clothes away from your campsite as well.

But actively take on a bear? Bears will have the upper hand in body mass and claws and teeth.

you don't really ever fight a bear. You either run or play dead (depending on kind). Surprising a bear or being near its cubs wil enrage it and then you're in real trouble. You don't fight a bear..... ever.

If that article was true, that's one lucky kid. However, you gotta realize he didn't really FIGHT the bear, but retreated, then pissed it off, and ran again.

Outdoorsly folk who have hiked in Alaska told me you don't shoot the thing, it will only make it mad.

You throw your backpack in another direction, not at the thing, and you lie down and play dead; and pray to every God you worship that the thing leaves you alone. It might sniff you and bat you around then hopefully walk away or check out your back pack.

One hiker told me that you carry a .357 magnum to shoot yourself before the bear gets ahold of you.

I can run about 30 mph but grizzlies can run 35 mph so you need to drop down and play dead and hope to heck the thing doesn't eat you.

The important thing is to show the bear who is boss. So you will have to get all up in the bear s face to teach it a lesson. I would probably have to kick the bear s ***.

Any normal human being can't find a bear, he'd be killed in a minute or less.

If you are Chuck Norris on the other hand, the bear is history!!

Does the solution have to involve me living through the fight?
If I had a shotgun it would be a different story.
