One reason is to show the depths of depravity the human heart will go to.
Man is so proud and self righteous that he will not believe he is absolutely depraved.
He refuses God, thinking himself good and moral, and rejects the humiliating truth that it is God's goodness and grace that prevents him from absolute degeneration. So God allows some to manifest what you call 'awful things to happen,' to show the state of us all and our terrible and desperate need.
Still man manifests arrogant self righteousness and pretends that he is better than those allowed to fall.
How can any be saved until they realise their most miserable and true state?
That you can suggest that God is bad when He has proved His infinite love and goodness in His willingly suffering the punishment of Hell in our place that we might, by faith only, (no works or penances) be united to Christ and be spared our just punishment, demonstrates awful sinfulness of which you seem to be unaware.
How in your sinfulness and lack of understanding can you presume to judge God? Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?
Do you really think that your judgement is better than His?
If you want to 'go to heaven and not hell,' how is that going to be possible until you come to a right conviction of your sinfulness?
Take great care in what you say and your thoughts against God.
Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost shall not be forgiven unto men.
And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. Matthew.
Verily I say unto you, All sins shall be forgiven unto the sons of men, and blasphemies wherewith soever they shall blaspheme:
But he that shall blaspheme against the Holy Ghost hath never forgiveness, but is in danger of eternal damnation. Mark.
And whosoever shall speak a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but unto him that blasphemeth against the Holy Ghost it shall not be forgiven. Luke.

First of all God is not a 'person', He is Spirit.
The existence of evil has puzzled people for generations, there's even a special name for the study of the question - theodicy.
The world God created was perfect, 'very good' until spoilt by man imagining he could run things better than God.
The evidence is now clear, man has made a mess of his world and of himself. You must ask and answer the question 'why does man make such a mess?'
God's allows evil to continue as part of a process of proving how twisted mankind actually is.
He isn't responsible for the evil or indifferent to the pain and suffering and promises a day when justice will prevail.
You can be sure it will come because Jesus came into this broken world to fix it. His sacrificial death has opened the way back to the world God originally made.
God patiently waits for men and women to turn from their imagined independence to living in His world in communion with Him.
Trouble is most folks are doing just the opposite and the world goes from bad to worse.
Have you thought of changing direction, of turning from going your own way to believing in Jesus and following Him?

Where does this idea come from that Christianity is supposed to be a "comfort"? Christianity is supposed to be *hard* and demands a lot from its followers. I'm afraid it is part of the "deal" between God and us that he allows us to do awful things. The upside for God is that sometimes we do extraordinarily good things of our own free will.

If you happen to be a believer, the answer is usually something along the 'mysterious' and 'don't attempt to understand the workings of the Lord' lines. Possibly with a smattering of 'all sins will be punished in the hereafter'. This meaning 'don't worry about all the bad stuff, you don't really understand it poor ignorant lamb, all the bad guys will get their comeuppance in the end'. Logically that would mean that a bad guy who didn't believe in God could do what he damn well pleased with no retribution and a child murdered whose parents decided she doesn't believe in God would probably not be allowed into Heaven.

I can see where your questin comes from. See, God gives us choices, and what we choose effects us and others. We are not perfect humans and we can not make the best choices every time. That is why many awful things happen. I really hopped that helped.

Those of us with children know that even though you teach your child the best you know how, there comes a time when you have to trust your child and trust yourself and your teaching ability that the child will make the right decisions when the time comes.
In those times the child must learn that each decision has consequences for not only him/herself, but for others as well. A well-trained child can understand that generally, but one that has been taught to escape responsibility by bad parenting may or may not learn that either in the hospital bed or in prison.

God is playing at hide and seek.
Here we hide amid the pain and the pleasure - waiting to find and be found.
Have compassion by all means but don't let appearances fool you.

Most "bad" things which happen do so because God gives a radical freedom to God's people; we are free people, not puppets on a string. But God does not cause "bad" things to happen. God loves us and grieves with us in our pain when "bad things" happen.
Bad things happen in the freedom that comes with the gift of life. When "bad" things happen to any of God's children, God is grieved and suffers with us. God does not send bad things to punish us or test us. In fact, God does not send them at all. There are powerful forces loose in the world, forces like evil, disease and death.

Many people who believe in God (and many who don't) ask this question. Bad things are caused by human beings. That really is the only answer that makes any sense. (To me personally, I should add)
