Our Mini Schnauzer (age 9) has had 2 operations to remove stones, and has been C/D for last year or so with lettuce the only snack, but has redeveloped stones again. Vet not happy with 3rd Operation prospect and put her on 2/3 can S/D canned food daily, supposedly dissolve them - NO other food allowed - CAN this work? - How long can she stay on the S/D alone (Instructions seem to indicate not a good idea to to use solely, but not clear if that is a mandate) - We are supposed to get another X-Ray when the 24 Cans are about gone, but if NOT gone, we don't know what to do (vet has little to say on that worry) - 3rd operation?? Stay on S/D Cans forever? - Go back to C/D (still have 50 Lbs dry C/D) - Psyche up for a loss again (our 2nd mini w/that problem)??? - Any alternative Suggestions????
What CAN we do, folks, we are in our late 60's and she is our wonderful, protective companion.. Thanks 'n G'Bless ---

maybe you should ask your vet if there are meds that can dissolve the stones so they can pass. they have meds like that for humans...and if you ask the vet maybe he can give you a prescription. a lot of the meds we take you can also give to your dogs. i know cos my dog gets "human meds" everyday for seizures. you just pick them up in a normal drugstore.

Do some research on the net. Look up Hydrangia Tincture. It is supposed to dissolve all kinds of stones, bladder and kidney. This is what the homeopathic people swear by. It's available at GNC and it does not cost very much.

for stones feed your dog wet food for the extra water, this helps dilute the urine and to prevent further stones from forming...stones form due to the acidic urine, so a low ph needs to be kept to keep stones from forming...try HILLS U/D canned food and feed your dog this forever...and I do mean forever...or else they will come back...I speak from experience...this is very frustrating because they will come back
