I have seen all kinds of questions here about outlawing plastic bags, race cars and so on. Everybody has a pet peeve that is a waste and should not be allowed. So, I was curious. How many people thing the world would be a better place if we all gave up cars, electricity, and all that stuff to live like the Amish, farming small plots of land by hand.

I meant "think" and not "thing" of course, but both "thing" and "think" real words and so pass the spell check.

And I wasn't so much interested in learning if you yourself wanted to be Amish as much as wondering if you think the world would be better if everyone ELSE were Amish. Of course if you say yes but you don't want to be Amish yourself, I will call you names!

Well, yes, to answer your question, the world would more likely be a better place - I lived and worked with the Amish in Pa. and they are wonderful people and make excellent neighbors. They also have a wonderful sense of humor and when they needed a ride to the hospital they did not hesitate to call on me for a ride in my car... there are many off shoots and different branches and beliefs amongst the community as to what is permissable... and as to being better off mentally as well as environmentally, to spend an evening sitting in a home with no hum of electric and the lovely calm glow of a gas lamp, well, it imbues an all is right with the world feeling of serenity...

I think their way of life is mostly better for the environment I probably wouldn't survive as Amish since I am a vegetarian. I don't think the Amish as a whole are against plastic bags. Yahoo and many other companies would really have to change their reliance on technology if everyone lived like the Amish. I like some technology, so living more like the Amish would work for me, as long as their was some technology.

Well yes the world would definately be better of if we lived like the Amish

But we dont actually have to be Amish.

They have some boring attitudes about social life
and their clothes are less than groovy

But their behaviour towards the Environment is to be recomended.

Hmmmm - the methane that cows produce do contribute to global warming :)

I live in Lancaster and seeing them every day makes me think we'd be better off living like them. We'd all be thinner, that's for sure! I don't think people could go from living our current lifestyle to how the Amish live. You have to be raised that way.

Hypothetically, the world would be a better place. But we're all spoiled!!! :)

No (sorry to the Amish) but the world runs in a forward thinking way making it positive. Do you want to farm every day cause I don't.

The environment would certainly be better off if we were all Amish. And better still if we were all dead.
But maybe a more practical solution is that we all try to be more mindful of what we're consuming and the rate at which we're poisoning our environment and look for reasonable solutions to those problems.

Not me. I respect the Amish but would not want to be one. We need people not to be as wasteful, but that's a bit extreme.
