Here's what Forbes has to recommend:

I agree with Forbes, go with a Fusion!
Consumer Reports also highly recommends the Ford Focus for teens (2002 or newer, except 2 door models) & there is not much to argue with THEM . They DO get great gas mileage

2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala. I like my 2004 Impala LS. It's a great car! There's tons of trunk space, and it is very comfortable on the inside. Also a little sporty. I had a Ford Taurus. I spent $15,000 in repairs, and it guzzled more gas then my 2006 Mustang. Worst car I ever had don't buy one! And no I don't abuse my cars.

There are others, but I'd pick the Toyota Corolla - it's reliable and safe - the most important two factors. Also, it's a Toyota and it looks cool, what more could you want?

Ford Taurus is great. Dependable, cheap to maintain, good gas mileage.Big enough to survive a fender bender. And not so trendy that all their friends will want a ride to the beach in it. If your kid is a teen, this is a definite plus!!! (Unless you're trying to impress somebody by the car you buy for your teen, which is a dumb thing to use the kid for)

Ford Fusion.
I own one. It's very nice looking, drives nicely, and in the base models can be had for under $20k.
