You weren't told to not serve. Sounds like you are not ready or you can serve best by living your life.

If such a thing happened to me, Id doubt the power of the thing Ive asked the question to.
Nothing comes out of nothing.
The law states that every action has an opposite reaction right?
That means when you perform someting you receive something as a result.
Doing whatever makes you happy, carries with it the meaning that you do random, nonsystematic behaviour that has no real meaning apart from satisfying your desires. The key word here is 'whatever'.
Unfortunately, most wise men have taught over the ages that giving in to your desires only leads more desires to arise on your behalf.
Thus, the law of physics is fulfilled in a spiritual sense:
if you are inclined to live for the sake of your desires, you get nothing but more desire
if youre inclined to live for the sake of improvement of others, you find people who work to improve your lifestyle as well
I live by the code of simple wisdom.
And if I was you, I would be careful about the voices that tell me to do whatever I want instead of doing something more beneficial.
But ofcourse, as with all things, there is an exception to the rule and that is, you doing whatever you want, serves a much more higher purpose than you serving in general.

You said that you were told " not to serve ". Yet, you also said that Spirit conveyed message to you " to just go and live your life...do whatever makes you happy ". I don't hear that you were messaged by spirit " not to serve ".
Are you touching the lives of those in your immediate circle of your personal life ? Loved ones, acquaintances, strangers, co-workers, etc.? Whose to say that you are not serving a higher purpose that you aren't touching others lifes ?
Are you seeking to preach from a stand ? To speak to masses ? Could it be that you are just where you are to be in this moment. Have you learned to live in the Now ?
Maybe you are to learn to Be within more so as to reflect out stronger later. Enhance your own Light so that Light will naturally emit out and touch others.
You were given an answer by Spirit . . . The answer was to simply Be. Rest, enrich, grow, learn to " hear " the voice of soul, know the place of simplicity...of Now.
Remember the line from a movie some years back . . . " Build it and they will come ". Be yourself and the rest will naturally evolve as it does. Patience with soul dear one. Be.

They didn't tell you not to serve.
They told you to go and live your life and do whatever makes you happy.
If you haven't been serving others, than serving others is not what makes you happy and you were asking to be used in a way that was not true to your heart.
If what makes you happy is serving others then that is what you should have done when you got your response.

That's just great! I was 'told' the same thing.
I was shown that this was one of the 'all-uniting' principles of life. In other words, one of the things we have in common with everything and all that is is that every being wants to be happy. This insight triggered a peak experience for me. It served as a bridge that connected me to All That is.
When you're happy, you affirm your own rightness in the universe. When you affirm your own rightness, you automatically affirm others rightness. You, being happy, make others happy just by being present. You encourage others more freely when you're happy. You also demonstrate for everyone that our happiness is our responsibility and within our grasp.
"Do not violate and do whatever makes you happy."
If you follow this commandment you will automatically serve the greater good. The next question becomes, "what makes me happy?"

You said you were told to do what makes you happy. If serving is what makes you happy, do that. If it doesn't work out make a new decision, then do that. Just don't sit on the fence believing that somehow some outside force will make you do the right thing. It is only in hindsight that we are ever absolutely certain we did the right thing.

You are serving right now. Just by asking this question, you have served. =)
I don't thing serving has to be in a guru sense or a Christ Jesus kind of way. One simple life can touch hundreds, maybe thousands, just by serving up good logic, by living a life of clarity. You seem to do this quite well!
I have a ninety five year old neighbor who watches my house, feeds my cats, takes my mail in when I'm away. She serves in so many considerate ways. Her long life, her way of living out her life, has helped and influenced so many.
We all have our ways of "serving" and it makes this earth a facinating place to be.

i would celebrate = you are therefore already serving in more subtle ways!
congratulations!
if you are not aware yet of what your role is, take some time to quietly reflect upon the things that you say or do or demonstrate in your life, both personal and professional.
sit quietly, light a candle and focus within - i think you will soon see what it is you are offering already!
perhaps it is because you are not overly ambitious or egotistical that you are not aware of the positive impact you have.
blessed be

sunman hits the nail on the head-
it is a great thing any one of us can do - to be a beacon of light (happiness, joy) and shine it out to the world- there is so much power in joy and happiness, and others will be touched, inspired by your example. i'm also sure there are ways that you do "serve" and are not even aware of it, or maybe just consider it part of normal life- being a good parent, a good friend, husband... inspiring others and making people think, opening minds here on yahoo answers...etc
:)

Try reason and compassion. If you like to serve, your fellow man needs you right now.
