I asked some of my friends, and about half said yes and half said no. Can someone clear it up for me? Thanks!

P.S. I know, its a stupid question. Do you think I care?

Chickens can get off the ground, and fly. I've seen several go from standing still to about 5ft, straight upwards. I've also had to go and retrieve a hen that had cleared a six foot fence, even though she'd had her wing clipped.

However, there are some very heavy breeds such as the cochin and cornish cross that can't fly, and also some breeds whose feather structure prevents them from flying, such as the frizzle and silkie.

You'll never see a chicken migrate though ;)

Most breeds of chicken can fly in that they can gain height, its not just about controlling a fall as in the first answer. Birds like Anconas or Cream Leg Barrs can fly about 30 feet / 6feet off the ground. More if they are motivated by Mr. Fox i suppose. We had a Rhoade Island Red up on the apex of our house roof this summer, i don't suppose she went up the stairs and climbed out of the window so she must be able to fly up to 30 feet high in one go. Not sustained flight but the 13 second "fact" above seems way off the mark from my experience. Trust me, i'm a chicken, i know this stuff.

Some people think that chicken cannot fly because only the wild chicken will fly higher and better wild in farm you only see them walking around so it is a YES

They can jump and flap their wing but they can't actually 'fly'. Some of my chickens could fly over the fence so my dad had to make the fence higher. They can only fly short distances like a couple of metres, but they can't stay in the air like other birds.

Chickens cannot fly long distance and also not for a long time.

It's not a stupid question I always wanted to know the same. I actually saw some chickens on a tree and I was like okay I didn't know chickens could fly. Then I later learned chickens can't fly like birds, they have poor flight, and they can't fly high. They can fly over fences, or fly onto trees, things like that
