I want to purchase an alarm sensor to detect objects behind my vehicle to protect my child. There are a wide range of systems/prices etc. so I'm looking on input from someone who actually has or installs these.

Let me clarify.. If I've just gotten into my car to leave why would I get out to look again unless I suspected that my child was nearby. I am interested in this item should my child unexpectedly follow me outside after I have already gotten in my car to leave. With safety locks, etc. the liklihood of this happening is rare, but I don't want to take the chance. (1 Child a week is killed in the US in rollover accidents) By the way... No one I know walks around the car to check it out every time they get in (searching for flats etc).

I am also trying to decide between the camera and the audible alarm.

The best sensor? Well, generally speaking the good Lord gave you two of them. It's called getting out and looking! And I'm not being sarcastic. If more people would just take the time to Get Out And Look (G.O.A.L. fromt the smith driving system) we'd have alot less incidents.

Anwyay, if you want the "electronic" protection devices, I lean more toward the video rather than the sensors.

Audiovox makes some real nice ones...

I don't recommend buying one on the net though. Go to a car accessory store and take a look at some of the display models and talk to the techs.

Good luck, be safe!

I agree with todvango get out and look or as you are walking to your car go around it you should look at your tires for bad or flat ones plus mechanical defects etc. anyway so why not look for kids also.

If you still need a backup alarm (sounding device) you can purchase one that replaces your backup light with a beeper and light combination, it goes inside your backup light so it does not show outside. Check with your local garage or auto parts supply store. I think they run around $20.00.

Thank you for at least thinking about the safety of your children and having a concern about how to make them safer. Maybe if others were thoughtful there would be less accidents. Good idea anyway, Roy

The audio alert that gives the beep, beep - beep when you put your car in reverse.
Any dealer or mechanic can install. Less than $100
HAD on pick up trucks at work and it is very good when moving.
Remember this if you live in the suburbs, you do not wnat to reverse your car at odd hours of the day. Back into the driveway when you get home at daylihgt and front out.

The noise is 70 dcb.
