These are the replaceable inserts that form the bearing surface inside the connecting rods to the crankshaft. Parts are around $50 and would look at the main bearings at the same time. For them to wear out it MAY and I am not saying did, but damage the crank. Now you are talking an engine rebuild. Why does someone say, without taking anything apart that the connecting rod bearings are bad? Sounds strange unless you have run it out of oil.

Rod bearings are little half circular shells that fit inside the connecting rods of most engines to act as clearance spacers for attachment of connecting rods to a crankshaft. When the rod bearings wear out, or when they fail, there is usually a rattling noise as the engine idles, or accelerates. Improperly sized rod bearings can lead to hard starting, poor performance, or even total engine failure.
Cost to replace rod bearings will vary on the make of engine, the number of cylinders and the complexity of the engne design. Most modern engines would require engine removal to replace rod bearings. This is a labor intesive project and is often combined with a total engine rebuild.

the pistons are connected to the crankshaft by rods...the rods are supported on the crank by bearings.these can wear out but not likely in a 97 model yet unless the engine has been abused/neglected.they typically will knock (not the little tick you hear with lifter noise) very loudly if they are bad.and typically you dont replace only the rod bearings.thats usually part of a major overhaul.get another diagnosis first

Connectig rods are attached to the crankshaft, bearings are a oil permeable metal sheath where con rods are clamped onto crank, not your roller bearing like in a wheel...Replacement means complete tear-down,with who knows what else wrong...high mileage dictates replacement engine

If you are going to spend a lot to replace rod bearings, you should also replace the main bearings, oil pump, and front and rear crankshaft seals.

a fair price should be around $ 600-$800 including parts.
however, prices will vary greatly from shop to shop.

This isnt a good thing.......or cheap.......you can jimi rig it but that doesnt solve the issue.........check on the prices for a short block and a long block before you spend several (700?)hundred just to keep it alive for who nows how long...ooppss there the bearings that go on the crankshaft for the piston rods........hence rod bearings......

Well if they can take the oil pan off without removing the engine I would say you'll pay for 4-6 hours labor @ $100-160/hr that leave you at:
$400-1000

If they gotta take the engine out you can triple that last figure

They are bearings for your rod.
