I've owned an English Springer Spaniel. He was so well-loved and widely known that I would often have to travel around the neighbourhood and "rescue" him from other families. At one point, I was even surrounded by a protective mob of bike riding children who thought I was trying to steal Woody, my dog, from them. Sometimes people would come by my house to see if he was around during the day and take him along for walks. When I did go to retrieve him, the only way I could convince anyone that I was in fact the owner was by calling him and describing the house where they knew he lived at. I seriously doubt that any dog could have lived a better life than him.

My family has owned several dogs, but Woody was the best-natured, most easy-going, and cool dog you could have. He'd always take the side of the underdog and put himself in between two people if he saw that they were fighting and one was getting the better in the situation--you can imagine how quickly that would diffuse a situation, and it was so sweet that it would bring tears to my eyes (it does even now as I remember it). We called him the Mayor of Maple Beach.

Now, we had Woody since he was a puppy, but before I went out and got him, I did a lot of research on how to select or choose puppies, regardless of their breed. I think that was the key in finding such a dog as great as Woody was. Basically, when I went to go and see a litter (and I saw several before I was happy), I was looking for a lot of things--I was twelve years of age when I did this, so anyone willing to put in the time shouldn't have any problems doing this--specifically related to how the dogs behaved with each other, their surroundings, and especially my presence. I had a few simple tests I put the puppies through, and basically I was looking for a dog which was neither too aggressive, nor too passive. I also wanted to see and visit the parents--there were times when it was clear just from the barking coming from the backyard that the puppies I was looking at were not a "safe" bet. And these were all English or Welsh Springer Spaniels. Finally, the breeders themselves and the cleaniness of their kennel/home was also a decisive factor.

In the end, I found a pup that matched all of the benchmarks I set out to find, and I can honestly say that the hours I spent in preparation was paid off with 13 years of one of the best friendships I've ever had. There are many wonderful breeds and personalities out there--just do your homework before selecting a puppy and try to find the right dog for you, and both you and your dog will be happy. I can't stress that last point enough.

Some English Springers are prone to hip dysplasia. This breed tends to gain weight easily, so do not over feed. Also prone to PRA, which affects the eyes, and PFK, a blood disorder, epilepsy, and HD. The English Springer breed has been experiencing a serious personality problem in some individuals called "Rage Syndrome." This is a rare disorder that also occurs in other popular breeds. An otherwise normal dog goes into a sudden rage, viciously attacking people. During the attacks the dog does not respond to commands. This condition is a form of epilepsy and can be treated. It is generally not evident until the dog is one to two years old. Check with breeders about history of "Rage" in the lines. If your dog is experiencing aggression problems, do not be too quick to label it as "Rage". Many Springers go through a "teenage" stage, where they may test their owners. They need an owner to knows how to display gentle, but firm leadership. This "teenage" behavior is too often misdiagnosed as being "Rage", when in fact, it is normal "Top Dog" behavior. It is best to have your dog tested before assuming they have "Rage"

yes, I have a Springer Spaniel. My ex-boyfriend and I had her shipped, by air, from Missouri about 3 yrs. ago. We were looking on-line for a private breeder, when we came across her picture. We fell in love with her right away.

she is the most lovable dog. she loves the water and boy can she run ! she is a very protective dog; when I was living with my ex, she was very attached to me, more the him..sometimes, he couldn't even come near me. even though I broke up with him, I still go visit her, but I hate to leave because she looks so sad.

If you get a chance to get one, I recommend the Springer highly.

I had one several yers ago and she was a great dog. Her only down fall was that she LOVED men!!!!
Oddly, the litter she came from all had herniated bellybuttons and none of the tails had been docked. Sadly I think that docking the tail is highly over-rated because she was one very beautiful dog with a full tail.
