You may be looking at the wrong date. Ancestry.com lists John Swanick as being born in about 1802:

John Swanick
Born: abt 1802
Carrowjames, County Mayo, Ireland
Died: bef 1855
Carrowjames, County Mayo, Ireland

Marriage to Mary Frances Kirkpatrick (1802-1872):
April 26, 1828

Children:
Edmond (1828-1888)
Arthur (1830-1912)
Frances (1833-1860)
Mary (1835-1914)
Sarah Rebecca (1841-1924)
John, Jr. (1842-1902)
Alexander Thomas (1845-1915)

Ancestry.com doesn't furnish John Swanick father, only the date of his birth (1770). Mary Frances' father was Alexander Kirkpatrick. Since the family seems to have immigrated to the United States after 1855, census records and ship manifests should pick up the record from this point in time.
