hi
i grew up with cockatoos and their are beautiful loving and can be very good pets until they reach about 5 years by then they will prob want a mate they are very very noisy and need alot of attention ,i have a macaw so no my stuff best buy for you would be a smaller bird African Grey or gal ha cockatoo they are smaller and not as noisy all birds can out live you if they are looked after properly make sure you give it a good diet, kaytee exact is very good plus lots of fruit and veg
buy from a breeder not a pet shop make sure you buy a baby bird that way it will only bond with you

First off, never buy a bird from a pet store. Find a local breeder near you. They are much more qualified and know much more about their birds and babies then a pet store. Plus they are cheaper.
Second, You will be involved with hand rearing your baby.
Third, Don't buy your child a bird because it needs a friend. That is a horrible reason to purchase a bird. A cockatoo lives way past puberty, and the driving and dating stage.
Starting off with a cockatiel is your best bet. But then again, a breeder is always the way to go. And again, your local National Cockatiel Society will point you in the right direction. Not a back yard breeder, who is just slapping two birds together and knows nothing about what they are doing.
Good Luck!

Cockatoos are wonderful pets if you have larger bird experience. I wouldn't get it for a kid. I have 4 and 5 year old boys and they don't hold the birds unless I am around.
Cockatoos can do a lot of damage with one bite. They can get very loud and they are one of the most re-homed birds of all the species. They tend to be very messy. During their hormonal times you had best just leave them alone.
I wouldn't give up my Too's for anything.
If I were you I would start with a Cockatiel. Try and get your bird from a breeder and make sure it is hand fed so it will be tame and easy to train.

cockatoo's can be a very good pet. Mine is affectionate, loves to be petted and carried. They are mostly very gentle and will not bite unless startled or scared. They will dance, sway, flap wings, and generally be very entertaining. They also have a very loud squawk and will use if when wanting attention. They love to have their people in their sight. Cockatoo's are large birds and can be damaging. I had to buy an expensive cage to house him. They are very bright and can figure out how to open many locks and snaps. They require a very sturdy cage. You should check with a pet store about cages. Tell them it's a cockatoo. They also love to chew up stuff. I give mine a variety of things. Wood blocks on chains, fuzzy things, plastic things (water bottles, etc). If left loose they can tear up furniture, shoes, remotes, most anything. They can be a very good pet, but also need a lot of attention.

They make wonderful pets. But they require a lot of attention and live for a very long time. Be sure you are ready for the responsibility and costs of health care before you decide to get one. They need to see the vet just like any other pet and that can get expensive. There are thousands of sites you can visit to learn how to take care of a cockatoo. Good Luck!

They need to be kept warm all the time and cockatoos will live for 85 years and they are messy. But they can be loving companions, if they are bonded with people to begin with.
Love birds and cockatiels wont live as long ... about 35 years, I believe.
