psychologist assistant?

Is there such a thing as a psychologist assistant?
Yestersday i went to my local hospital to be evaluted for some home issuse and i saw this guy who talk to me in psych place and when he was done talking to me he said. I will go call my psychologist and then i'll come in and talk to you then you can go home. So my question is what was he and what does he really do? Im intersted in that job and wanna know more about it?

Probably a masters in social work. Also know as an MSW. It only requires a masters degree instead of a doctorate.
