You should start by playing with the dog then slowly start with the toy. you should throw the ball (toy) while saying a command like (go get it / fetch) this will put it in the dogs mind use the command every time. you can start the by throwing the ball if the dog does not chase it you say the command and you go get it bring it back. REPEAT it wont happen the first time this worked with my dog hope it helps!!!!!

Throw one ball for him, and have another on you. When he comes back (it sounds as if he comes back but you can't get the ball off him?) you bounce the other ball. He'll soon try and get the ball *you* have, and drop the other one. When he drops the ball, put a word to it.....could be "Drop". Throw your ball for him, pick up the one he had, and do the same again. He'll soon be coming back and dancing around you, wanting the second ball. Then eventually he will come straight back, and you won't need the second ball. Separately, in the house, with just one ball, sit on the floor, throw his ball, and don't attempt to take it off him. Let him drop it at your feet. Throw it for him. Build it up so that he's coming closer and closer with the ball. Then put your hand out, and let him drop it close to your hand. When he's doing this happily, then you can hold your hand out, and wait for him putting it in your hand. It'll happen eventually. The *big* problem with toys is that the owner is always trying to get it off the dog, and then they don't give it back! So the dog, naturally, wants to hang on to it. If you teach the dog that every time he gives you his ball, you're going to throw it for him, he's going to *want* to give it to you. This will take a few weeks, but stick at it. Control of the play is an excellent tool in training any dog.

before you throw the ball play with him making sure that he knows what toy he should be playing with. then when you throw the ball and he stays over there playing with it call him over, im sure that he'll bring the ball back. keep doing that until he knows that when you throw the ball that he is always supposed to bring back.

have some treats in your pocket. throw the ball when he has it call him and show him the treat when he comes for them have him sit and take the ball from his mouth. give him a treat and make a big deal how he is a good dog and keep repeating he will get the hang of it sooner or later

Either the dog sees the ball throwing as a game or he doesn't. I don't know what to do in either case. I wish mine would just keep the darned ball.

Some dogs don't have a strong retrieve instinct.
But it sounds more like your question is how do I get my dog to give my the ____ when he retrieves it.

since he picks it up already.if he brings it back to you, but when you try to reach for it he runs away, hes probably just playing with you. like catch me if you can. if he does that catch him and take the toy away from him and give him a treat. he will learn to give you the toy. it worked for my puppy(golden doodle).
