It also depends on the kind of reel you're using. Using a heavier weight would work too. Good luck! - ma

Liberals know as much as a box of rocks.. The Liberal ideology is a theory , fostered by a delusional, illogical minority and which holds forth beliefs that have no basis in reality. They are Advocates of a policy that empowers a strong federal government to enslave its people with a high tax burden incident to the support of extravagant and unnecessary social programs destructive to both the work ethic among the lower class, and the incentive to innovate and succeed among the working class. "When the people find that they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic." Liberals like to spend other peoples money!! The problems we face today are because the people who work for a living are outnumbered by those who vote for a living. Criminals don't pay any attention to laws... If guns were ever banned than only the bad guys would have them..Criminals prefer unarmed victims!! Having a gun will not help all the time but being defenseless will never help.. When seconds matter calling 911 and asking the bad guy to wait is not a viable option. Better to have a gun and not need it than to need it and not have it!!! **Police do not protect you from crime, they usually just investigate the crime after it happens.** @

Use a heavy enough sinker to keep your bait in one place on the bottom, or use a heavier lure to keep the line tighter when you retrieve it, or use thinner line.

If you're still fishing from a boat and the boat's rocking keeps dragging the sinker close as you try to tighten the line, the trick is to move the rod down as the boat rocks up, and vice versa, basically keeping the rod tip in one place even though everything else is moving.

The other thing to watch out for is current -- if you cast upcurrent, the water motion will tend to move the sinker back towards you. Cast downcurrent if at all possible.

With a lil more weight and reel down to bring in slack and also try setting your rod pointing out more level with the fishing line! I personally leave slack in my line and use very little weight at all while catfishing and some surf fishing!

Learning the feel of the bottom, especially with a very light weight, is something that takes time and practice. Paying attention to the wind and also the current, yes the current, even in small lakes, is paramount. Work your rod and reel slowly developing the "touch". Something also to consider is the #test of the line you are using. The smaller the diameter, the supple the line will be.

Slack comes from lack of tension on the line when you reel it in.

If you're in a boat let the line out as you slowly run until it's all the way out. Then reel it in while you gently pinch it between your fingers. This will alleviate the tension problem and remove the twist from the line.

If its breezy / windy cast with the wind or straight into the wind. Not across it.

Or You might use a heavier lure /sinker,you might try a longer rod and a reel with a high gear ratio to keep slack reeled up

Use a heavier sinker. If you are fishing on soft bottom, use a pyramid sinker. If rocky or gravelly bottom bank sinker. The reason your line is slack is because your sinker is moving around.

One way to do this is to use fluorocarbon line. It is more dense than mono-filament, cuts through water better than other lines of the same diameter and best of all it has a great deal more sensitivity (and transparency) than mono.
