I want my ex to know how much I still love him and still want to be with him. Is it better to express that love whenever I get the chance? Or, is it better to play hard to get and act like I couldn't care less about him and getting back? I want to do whichever one will be more beneficial in the long run. I don't want to be too overbearing, but I don't want to not be there for him anymore ( out of sight, out of mind). What do I do? I miss him terribly.

Pretending you don't care is childish. Be honest, tell him how you feel. If he rejects you, then you have your answer and you must live with it.
Respect him and yourself - if the relationship is over, let it be over. Any further pursuit is nothing but clingy kid stuff.
