Most of the first New Testament Christians were Jewish. Very well the name was to distinguish them from the Jewish church. Interesting enough, the name 'Christian' was given to them, and was not created by the New Testament church.

the term "christians" was used because the followers preached "Christ"... as the defining identity... not according to the ethnicity because many followers were/are not Jewish.
