Beauty is publicized all around us, and sex sells. Simple as that.

It's nature. Studies have shown that humans look for partners who are beautiful because nature tells us that the offspring from this union would have better chances of survival than with a partner who is not as attractive. Being attractive to the human brain equals dominance and survival sense. In fact, there was a special in the Discovery Channel that discussed just this point. Humans look at the layout of the face, and if it is symmetrical to other points of the face--then you are a good candidate for that person's partner. In addition, the human body mimics the sexual organs in other parts of the body. Cleavage is akin to the lower back above the buttocks, lips are akin to the lips on a woman's vagina, the human torso when looked at from afar looks like a face--its all to remind the other party that this is a good match. Why are people even more obsessed now with this than ever? Now that the afore-mentioned information is common knowledge, the marketing industry is using it to its advantage. Cosmetic enhancements cater to this frivolous aspect of the human being, as well as the fashion industry, which tell us how much weight is acceptable and what body type is THE one to shoot for. Everything now has to do with dollars and cents and it totally takes away from the mystery that is the human body and human beings in general. This is my humble opinion, anyway.I hope this helps!

okay question was a bit hard to understand, but why do i think people are so obsessed with beauty now?

Well look at what hollywood is doing, look at your Paris Hilton ( jail bird) , and linsey lohan, and Brittney Spears. Look at the shows that are on tv now, it's not the 50's thats for sure where things weren't so sexualized, and things were more about someones personality then what was on the out side.

Now the biggest thing on the news is fashion week in paris, or victoria secrets fashion show of angels.

We have become a very shallow country, with the movement of womens liberation that shifted from equal rights to the sexual revolution of lets be trashy, and make everything matter about what we look like so we can get somoene in our bed.

People are obsessed because they have simply become shallow and simple shells of what people once were and what they should really be.

Historically there has always been an obsession with beauty. It just changes from culture to culture.

For Example:

-Victorian Trend to have 17" waists
-Chinease Culture with Foot Binding
Cultures that view women of size as more beautiful than skinny women because it says they come from money.

it's not just nowadays........ women, have been obsessed with beauty ever since primitive cave women took kohl (coal) from the fire pits to darken around the eyes and used berries to stain the lips and cheeks. The obsession with beauty has been around for not just centuries, but millenia. It will always be an obsession, and companies make billions off that desire to look good to attract the opposaite sex.

that is called hedonism and I think it is caused principally by all the marketing and publicity, the medias, etc. people get obsessed with that, they sell you the idea and people like it and then they take it as a vital part of their lives.

It's not a recent thing, but mass media and communication has made it easier to compare one's own beauty to another.
