That doesn't really make any sense, if he crashes and ends up last then no, only the first three get money. If he crosses the line last he gets nothing...?

When you say "driver" you're talking about harness racing;
thoroughbreds have jockeys. If a harness driver crashes
his sulkey, there's a pretty good chance that he won't finish.
Only finishing horses (actually the driver) get paid.
At the local harness track,
payment for drivers goes to the top 5 finishers. The
"purse " is paid something like this: 1st-50%, 2nd-25%,
3rd-?%, 4th-?%, 5th-5%. Thus, if the purse of the race is
$1000, and there are five finishers, 1st gets $500 and
5th gets 50 bucks. It's probably a similar payout for the
thoroughbreds, but can vary by the class of the race.
Just want to clarify one more thing. The driver doesn't get
any money directly. The horse's owner gets a check, and
then pays the driver , the trainer, the farrier, the vet, etc.

No, if he is crashes and is last for the rest of the race, then he doesn't win any money. It's only the first 3 horses that get placed wins money and sometimes it is the first four horses. Driver doesn't make sense and you don't say driver, it's a jockey who rides a horse. Glad I could help =D
