I dont know if you have any musical background. For me, the main thing is to know the groups of chords in a harmonic pattern. Once you know this, you can already play your own songs and create music.
Basic music notes are A, B, G, D, E, F, G but you must play them in a harmonic like A, D & E or D, G & A. You cannot play the chords A and then go to F and then to B as you like. It will sound completely out of whack.
Get a good book that describes harmonics and how to hold the above chords.

take it slowly, dont rush into it, and dont give up! learn chords and scales first, yes scales can be boring, but u can do amazing things with them once u learn them. always use your pinkie too, not just your first three fingers, practice practice practice, it takes time to build up speed and endurance, dont simply learn just songs youve heard, try and come up with your own as well. go find some websites on guitar, heres a few of my favorites of when i first started out
www.all-guitar-chords.com = good for learning chords

www.ultimate-guitar.com =good for tabs on songs

www.guitarmasterclass.net = has some free lessons

and if you have a hard time readin the tabs, or cant get timing right and such, listen to the song your trying to learn while reading the tab, or go to www.youtube.com they have some free lessons on there too type in nextlevelguitar in the youtube search bar, they give good lessons .........good luck and get to rockin \m/ :)

The one thing that helped me the most was memorizing where all the notes are on the fret board.

It's not as hard as it may sound. The pattern of notes repeats over and over.

Once you do that, figuring out how all the chords and scales fit together is much easier.

i wouldn't sugest trying to find tabs (another word for chords) on the internet most sites are pretty pop-up crazy. i would suggest buying a book at guitar center or borders.

good luck,

Electric or acoustic, I always tell my students to learn acoustic first, it helps them become better players.
