Best option for $5000 or less?

Question

My friend and I are going to look for cars tomorrow. It's easy for me to do all the talking, since its not my money. But, what do you think we'll find in his price range? He's hoping for something with under 100,000 miles, automatic, 2000 or newer, and good on gas. I obviously told him he won't find all of this, and he'll have to make some compromise. Any tips?

Sorry, I forgot to say we're going to look at cars for him... I'm all set.

There is actually quite a variety of vehicles...the buick or oldsmobile isn't a bad idea; trying looking on Autotrader in your area too. I definitely would have a carfax report run and a mechanic check out the car, as stated above. Other cars I saw included ford focus, mercury sables and ford taurus, etc. Good luck!

Actually you could find a car, look in www.autotrader.com, make a good area to search, about 100 miles from your zip code.
Put the money you want to spend and you can find some cars.

You can find good Ford Escorts, Cavaliers for a good price. I bought a Escort with 59k and I paid less than 4k. Check it mechanically, though, and carfax, of course.
You can find something as fast as you are not so picky.

not true,
look at private party sales.
there is a lot out there that you can get for around 5k in great shape.
ask for receipts on service records and take the car you like to a real mechanic not associated with the seller in any way.
if you find what kind of car that she/he likes,start shopping the papers,auto trader,and the web.
if all else fails drop me an email and i will search that car out for you in your area and hook you up.with my price.
