I find it illuminating that Yahoo wanted to put this question in the GLBT section. Do you see what I see?

I attended an Assembly of God church for a year. I saw those screaming fanatics rolling on the floor speaking gibberish while the pastor spouted bigotry from the pulpit.

I was sort of aware that there were nutty Christian sects in the USA, but I wasn't aware how widespread it seems to be. Also I wasn't aware that the Christian faith is interpreted in such extreme ways by so many people still today.

Yes, I knew about them before I came here. No, nothing here surprises me a bit... people who follow, literally, something that wasn't written literally can't possibly do anything that would surprise me. I lived in a very conservative, fundamentalist area most of my life and know that most of those people who did that, were doing it to cover up the crap they do wrong. How best to take the spotlight off of your bad deeds than by making a big deal out of someone elses? It's just pathetic to watch grown people act like little kids.
I've seen them talk in tongues and roll around too. The first time I ever saw it I was 15... and I thought the old woman was epileptic. If you ever have a chance to witness something like that again... ask for an interpretation. If there isn't an interpretuer, then it is useless gibberish. Even the bible shows that when one speaks in tongues in front of an audience, there better be an interpretuer around. Oddly enough, I have yet to witness an interpretation of any of the garbage they spout when doing that.

The first time I attended a church meeting at an Assembly of God was about 20yrs ago, and it'll be the last.
Any church that has people speaking gibberish, and in my opinion flipping out all over the place isn't the place for me.
I do not see that as enlightening in the slightest. I see it as participation in mass delusion.

Yes, I was quite familiar with them, because I live in an area where there are plenty of Fundamentalists. And having had questions about Christianity, I have approached various preachers of different denominations in my area to see if they could answer, so I met a few Fundamentalists like that, and got to discuss my views with them and see how they responded.
Mostly, those that I would call Fundamentalist were the ones that least attempted to address my questions. The more mainstream Christians often surprised me with their ability to come up with fairly decent answers. I almost got the impression that the "Fundamentalists" which I personally approached were the least secure in their faith, since they didn't want to talk to me. The more mainstream ones were not afraid of me and my questions.
On the other hand, one of the nicest and well-informed pastors I know calls himself a Fundamentalist Christian. He is amazingly tolerant of my Hindu beliefs. He does not agree of course, and I am sure he wishes I would be Christian, but he has never tried to push me, and has been very respectful. He is also quite open-minded. I'm glad to have met him, because it made me more open to people who call themselves Fundamentalist.
On here, I've "met" some that are more intolerant, and I find it sad. But they have the right to believe as they do.
PS. I don't know what's with Yahoo and trying to put questions in the GLBT section! I've had questions that were obviously about religion, and it wanted to put them there, and I never did figure out why! Weird.
