Try worms or night crawlers. They usually work in lakes. Good luck to you! - ma

lilly.
Pretty broad question, but seein' as how there was mention of either lake or river you'd be fishin', then I think that we've established the fact ~ freshwater. What with the hours on fishin' times, I'm lookin' at those, "Gross bottom feeders",
yup' Cats (only my thoughts)... Like ta' point out that them Cats are not only tasty for the stomach, but great fighters ;)!!!
Hope ya' do good and have fun...

For nightime fishing, especially when fishing from a boat and casting to shoreline cover, lures with a single hook (dark colored Texas rigged worms, black bladed spinnerbaits, weedless jigs/craw, topwater frogs) are far less apt to give you trouble by snagging logs, brush, rocks, etc... than those lures with multiple exposed treble hooks. Generally you will get a better hook penetration with these lures. You might also want to use a good graphite rod and braided line for night fishing so you have extra sensitivity.

Depends on the water type and what you are fishing for. Try a worm for bass, pumpkin seed works pretty well. And try a fly for crappie.

You could just use the common bait worms or you could use earth worms the (white ones) or if you want to be fancy about bait then you could get a small crab and use the guts for bait .

Try a live shiner freelined if you mean live bait.
read this link for more info on rigging and using shiners

For lures at night try a black jitterbug, a 10 inch black plastic worm, or a spinnerbait or buzzbait , Black is a great nighttime color to use

You need to narrow it down a bit like 'what are you fishing for?'. Fresh or salt water, etc.
Live crawfish or minnows will catch just about anything (crawfish catching larger fish).
