No, I'm not joking or being flippant. Yes, I know there are many places which are given a bad press, but are actually nice places to visit. This is a purely hypothetical question as I can't afford to go to either country. Thanks for all the answers so far.

Ive been to both places, but Id have to recomend Iran. Aside from what some of the armchair experts on here have to say, the people in Iran are actually very nice and are able to seperate a countries government from it's people (something some of you should work on).

I really had the best time in Iran. The people there genuinely are more concerned with making sure that you enjoy your time there, and everywhere you go (especially in the smaller towns) you'll get people coming up to you to have a chat and ask questions about where you're from. If you're interested in shattering your illusions about a place, and knowing more about a country aside from what you've seen on the news, Iran is the place to go.

The government regulations on visas can be a bit of a hassle though, but once you get past that, it's a great place.

well Iran is home to some of the greatest treasures of the ancient world, hanging gardens of Babylon and many ancient sites on the UNESCO (united nations educational, scientific and cultural organisation), world heritage sites.

A fabulous country with a rich and varied history, parallel in time to ancient Egyptian culture.

It's just a shame that their country has become the brunt of antagonism of the west. Regardless of Saddam.

I've been to India, but not Pakistan, food wonderful there, but don't really know much else, but would love to visit the ancient relics of Iran. Hopefully in this life time I will

Thanks for asking this question. I imagine others may think you are being flippant, and maybe you are. And it's that's the case, its a shame..

Speaking as a woman, I would say neither.
However, since this is hypothetical, I'd have to say Iran. There are still many problems in both countries, but Iran has a more advanced attitude.

If you are travelling alone (and assuming you are a female) or with a group of females (again assuming you are female), then go to Iran as Pakistan will be dangerous to you.

But if you are a guy or going with a group containing more than 1 guy, go to Pakistan BUT make sure you have one of the well known TOUR COMPANIES plan out your tour. Concentrate mainly on NWFP and Northern Punjab.

Leave out Baluchistan and Sindh, and Central/South Punjab - due to excessive heat and current political problems.

Do visit Islamabad though!

Iran - it's safer and has the world's best caviar. It has indeed many cultural attractions Don't miss Iran's Blue Mosque of Tabriz - not to be confused with the the Blue Mosque of Istanbul - rebuilt but exquisite and dating from 15th century. But the cultural attractions don't include, see below, the Hanging Gardens of Babylon. For those you'd need to slip a bit further south to a country whose name currently escapes me. Similar spelling, though. A matter, I think, of minding one's 'n' and 'q's.

Not the best places for holidays. Especially not now. I've spent some years in Pakistan, there are much nicer and safer holiday destinations. India would I think be better right now. If I had to choose between the two I would choose Pakistan. Pakistan is one of the easiest or less strict of the Islamic countries.

If I really have to choose for myself, it would be Pakistan because I know a whole family as my friends there.
Besides, some members of the family have visited my country a few times before.

My recommendation to you? Neither.

I'd go to Iran but make sure you have a second passpot as you won't be able to enter the US or Israel if you have an Iranian stamp.

iran will be far better as for history is concerned, plus there are lots of iranians that hate americans and it will be an experience for the kids to know that americans are hated in some other parts of the world no matter how stupid these people are for having these kind of attitude about us since they don't know anything except what their leaders told them which are all lies.
