My dog is a female Chihuahua and she always barks at the slightest noise. Even if she hears cars going by on the street that are relatively loud, she continually barks, long after the car has gone by. Also, when my friends, family, or guests come over, she continually barks, long after they have entered the house and been there for a few minutes...when car doors slam, people knock on the door, any little minuscule movement triggers her to bark. I am not asking for her to never bark again, as that would be unreasonable, I am just hoping that someone could give me advice on how to make her stop barking after I have been alerted of the situation. I have tried telling her 'no', and other forms of 'scolding,' though my scolding has never gone beyond a strict NO! Needless to say, it didn't work, as she kept right on barking. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance!!

Vinegar into a spray bottle.

When the dog barks after you tell it "No barking" spray it in the face with the vinegar.

You dog will smell like a salad for a few days but it works.

Truly the vinegar idea pales in comparison to the sheer genius of a headlock. I am sorry I even said anything.

What I've done with my dogs is wait until they bark and scare them with a really loud noise. Make it obvious that she is not allowed to do that in those situations. You can even correct her when she looks like he is about to bark and break her out of that mode. It takes a lot of work and practice though. I saw this on "The Dog Whisperer" on National Geographic Channel.

Also, you may want to get her a bark collar if this doesn't work. They are not that bad as many people think.

Obedience class is the best money I've ever spent. First, I'd suggest that. They teach you the difference between behaviors and obedience. The trainer I chose uses the chain collars (aka, choke chains). This scared me, but if used correctly they work like a CHARM. You keep this on your dog, and have the leash on it. When your dog exhibits a behavior that you don't want, you correct them by basically ripping the leash to the SIDE of the dog. You must do it hard enough to startle them. Don't worry, it won't hurt them. Dogs necks are strong. You must remember to do it to the side, because dogs are built to pull front and back with their necks.... thus why if you correct them to the side it throws them off, and they want to know what's going on! You must remember to give a firm "NO!" when you correct the dog as well. All it takes is one good correction, and your dog will understand it. Be sure to stand up straight. If you bend over, your dog will know you're a softie... because that's what you do when you want to love/play with them. If you can teach your dog to walk along your left side by using this technique, you can easily correct her. Be sure to keep that collar on for a while- dogs are smart, while training they'll know when you have that collar off! Dog training is 90% training the person! :) Hope this helps, and good luck!

I have a Chi myself and they are too small for a bark collar. My lil guy used to bark at any noise so I tried the spary bottle method, however NO vinegar. I just would spray him in his face, but not too close where it could hurt him. Of course I would say a firm no at the same time. He now rarely barks and when he does I show him the spray bottle and he hushes up. It just takes time and patience...

Have you tried the can with stones in it? After you acknowledge the original reason and she keeps barking - shake the can and it should startle her then tell her "Enough". I've also heard spraying them in the face with a squirt gun/bottle of water works. Never heard of using vinegar water.

the vinegar thing is the stupidest i have ever heard...

you should just put him in a headlock or make some threatening gestures to shut him up. Don't actually hit the dog though, thats just not cool.
