With the prisons overcrowding do you think that criminals should be given the option of joining the forces instead of going to prison?
A person who could be sent to prison for 5 years could be given the option of 2 years in the army. With pay and discipline they may come out more responsible, and there is always the option for them to sign on for longer.
I know it's putting the onus on the forces but I'm sure they have dealt with worse over the years.
I wouldn't extend this to serious crime like murder or paedos etc
What do you think?

Good points put forward about being alongside these criminals. Why not set up a separate section and put them all in it. They could ride point in places like Iraq and Afghanistan. If any show moral fibre transfer then we could transfer them to the regulars

That is a good idea and I'm surprised that no one else has thought of it till now.

I doubt if the government would take it up though as they always seem to think they have the right idea of how to combat crime which clearly isn't working with the current crime levels on the UK.

I am in the forces as a policeman. It will not help us if criminals join us.
The army have all ready has enough criminals as such we don't need anymore.
However i am sure there will be something that can help crime.

For example: Whilst the people are in prison, make it like there in the military and make it hard for them.

They need to stop having there own rooms with TVs and other comforting accessories. Its like a holiday camp. They have to much freedom.

Oh, they also come out with more qualifications than anyone else, who hasn't been in.

While in theory it is a good idea and is one i would agree with it would not work. As an ex serviceman myself i can tell you that you need to be able to trust the man next to you with your life, if that man is a con who doesn't want to be there then would you trust him with your life? Even if they are given the choice many of those who went into the armed forces would resent being there and end up possibly getting someone killed. Also the idea of Arming a con with a rifle would put the fear of god into those who joined oftheir own free will.

I think that in come cases, they do already have that option available. The problem I see is, can you really trust the gang-banger or criminal that chose the military to 1) do what he us supposed to do there 2) not endanger those in his troop 3) not mis-use what he learned in the military when he gets out? If it can be worked out, I do think it is a good option though, like you said, for less serious crimes.

The job of the military is to provide for the defense of the country, not rehabilitate criminals.
If my life were on the line, i would want someone on my side who has shown I can depend on him, not a person there for rehabilitation. Can I believe he will not cut out and run? My life depends on it. NO WAY IN HELL do I want him around.

Well, if you were on the battlefield, would you want a bunch of criminals, crooks and thugs "protecting" your back?

Criminals are cowards....that's why they commit crimes. They will be no braver on the battlefield.
