My daughter loved the Fisher-Price toys. Any type of learning toys are great and you can find some pretty cool ones for pretty cheap at wal-mart, target, etc. I got my daughter the peek-a-boo blocks and accessories for her 1st birthday. Clothes are also a really good idea. You might even be able to find a nice ride-on/ push toy for under $20. That would be really good since the child is turning 1 and either walking or getting ready to. Hope that this helped and good luck. (there is just so much out there! :)

Books! Find a classic picture book you enjoyed as a child. Pick a Caldecott winner...books will be used for YEARS.

Something I loved that my girlfirend got for each one of my twins, Their first teddy bear. At 1 year old the child has no clue what they are getting. Yes, educational toys are nice, so are clothes but the majority of people will bring those. Their first teddy is something to be saved. My boys are 14 I still have thoses teddies on their beds, well, I put them on the beds they hide them on the side of the bed. You get the picture.

I don't know how much this costs, but my Son's most played with toy that he got for his first birthday are Mega Blocks, ages 1+. He is just now, at 15 months starting to understand how they connect, but prior to that, he loved to mouth them, we would sort them by color, I would build a huge tower and he would tip it over, and so on... Good luck, and have fun at the party!
