Is or was?
I think Jesus was a working class Jew who challenged the extremely powerful and wealthy Levite priesthood, its connection to and influence upon the government, its collection of money from the poor to pay for golden cherub statues, its dogma, its intolerance, and so on. He taught that one's relationship with God is individual and that it can be done anywhere (ie fancy temple and priest not required).
Sort of what Martin Luther did to the Catholic church 1500 years later. Luther was also killed by those who opposed his ideas. But people call his death martyrdom rather than crucifixion.
The only difference between Jesus and Luther is that Jesus claimed to be the son of God.

I believe he reincarnated many times through different people in the Bible. He was Adam and many others. if you look up books on Edgar Cayce, you will see this.
Jesus was a man who went through many lives to become perfect. He did it before all of us. We was the first. That is all. We was a wonderful example for the rest of us to follow. In the end only was he perfect. He showed us how to get there.

Jesus was a very 'aware' sentient being, who, we can all safely assume, did not call himself Jesus.

Say hello to Winnie The Jesus :)
Jesus, I think, is just like Buddha, the Prophet Mohamed, Lord Krishna and the likes.
They are people like us in different religions, but they believe in their faith and practise it to help us ''lost'' souls.
---------peace out----------
